the main problem is that the laptop doesnt seem to be able to work with an external screen. i only have a vga cord and my television has a vga port. the computer i have on the television right now is a compag RX895AA-ABA-SR5023WM which is a desktop.
sounds to me like it does work connected to the tv, it's just that after a certain point in the boot process it's switching to the inbuilt screen alone. probably the easiest way to fix this is to close the lid after you power it on.
of course you'll need an external usb keyboard and mouse connected but if you don't have them then the other way to use the tv as the main screen is to find the correct key on the keyboard that when pressed changes which screen it uses(think it'll look like a blue square monitor) , it might be a function key where you need to hold down 1 key then press another.
if you supply the make and model of the laptop, i'm sure we can find you more detailed instructions to follow if your still having problems.
just to clarify if the tv works with the laptop even if you don't have an external usb mouse and keyboard to connect, did you connect the tv with the vga cable then power on the laptop and close it's lid?
my laptop screen was recently broken and i need to get some files of there.
If your immediate concern is to recover important files from the notebook then I recommend you pull the drive out of the notebook and install it into an enclosure attached to a second computer, or installed in the second computer as a secondary drive (not the boot drive) and then copy them over.

I'll try that today and see what happenes.
sorry but those are it's specs and not the make and model.
i added this information because it was in the instructions on "how to ask for help"
M-6320 Notebook
Part Number: 2906055RGateway M-6320 Notebook
i was able to find some information about hooking up an external monitor to the gateway m6320 notebook, it said that if you hold Fn + F4 it should switch over . this was the simplest one that didnt really requier a working monitor. i tried it but no luck so far, i also tried doint it while the lid was down, again no luck.
what you do is hold down the fn key and then with every tap of the f4 key it should switch between display modes. ie. laptop only, laptop+tv, tv only then back to laptop only.
surprised nothing showed up on the tv with the lid closed or using the fn + f4 key tho so think it might be that the resolution settings are set to high for the tv to display.(sounds a silly question but are you sure the tv was set to display the vga input source)
looks like digerati's tip of taking out the drive is going to be the quickest way to access your files until you get a new screen fitted or another monitor screen to test with.
i tried the Fn +F4 keys nothing happened, ill try them again.
the vga cable has to be working because i am using it now with my desktop and my lcd television.
i dont know how you would configuer the television to show the laptop because it simple gives you the option to switch to PC. it readjusts it self after that.
i thought you might have said that this model laptop was not capable of doing this.
i do have a seperate screen form the desktop i am using on the television. it is also a compaq
yes it is capable of display on an external tv or monitor, which is proven when you said the boot process shows up on it, until it boots into windows in an earlier post.
try connecting it to the compaq monitor, and see if that works.
i think something is happening because i now cant see anything not even the boot up, so i am thinking i must have changed some setting for the monitor. the bad part is i dont know what it is i changed.
is there any posibility that the video card or the monitor itself has stopped working because i fiddled with it.
i tried the compaq desktop monitor and it gave me the same results as before with the boot up and then black, but now it is just all black like my television screen.
its kind of hard troubleshooting because the monitors i try the laptop on, keep going into sleep mode.
if i take the battery out maybe that will allow me to see the boot up again, at least.
also is there maybe another mode i could try and start the laptop in that would help.
well the monitor should be easy to test just connect it back to the pc and see if it works.
yes take the battery out of the laptop, disconnect from the power cable, then hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
now connect the monitor to it (if it was working on the pc), connect the power cable, turn on the laptop and close the lid, if nothing shows up on the monitor then yes it could be a problem with the graphics card and to be honest i can't think of anything else to try except to take it to a professional to be looked at.
take the hard drive out and connect it to your other pc first and get any/all files off it you need.
fingers crossed.
i think the lid needs to be closed straight after you've hit the power button and not after it's had time to boot into windows for it to automatically use the external monitor.
been a long time since i've played with a laptop and external monitors so now can't remember if it auto detects the monitor and uses it after it's been booted into windows and the lid is closed or if it just goes to sleep, think it just went to sleep so nothing would show up on the monitor if you leave it to long before closing the lid.
