Hi all, Wanted to know if it's possible to replace a LCD by myself. I know a little about the ins and outs of a laptop, but by no means am I an expert. Could possibly look this up on google, but wanted to know if anyone who isn't a laptop pro has done it. Feedback would be greatly appreciated :D cheers.
Hi Lochy, This is a simple and quick repair….and as long as you are are careful you should not hit any problems…. in the workshop this only takes a short while to complete. however you ask if anyone who is not a laptop pro has ever done it…..
I'm sure they must have done but folks do get rightly wary about disassembling a laptop…..

Even in a well equipped workshop with technicians who know their stuff, brittle plastic parts can break….. and a moment's inattention when handling a screen can cause problems..so the watchword is to use care and take things slowly.

There should be no problem in finding a spare HP G6xxx series to practice on…… most workshops have a box of them laying around somewhere…(they have a tendency to burn out their video chip/circuit on the motherboard, due to excessive heat build up and an absence of a satisfactory heatsink in the basic design…..) The correct repair procedure to replace/reball the video chip and fit a copper heatsink is relatively expensive and folks often prefer to buy a new machine rather than repair the old one…..

Are you sure your screen is faulty and its not the video chip/circuit on the motherbaoard that is causing the fault?

If you have checked it all out and its just the screen that needs replacing then here is a link to a video that shows your the basic procedure:

this is for the DV6
and this one for the G6

Good luck with the repair

Thanks heaps for your reply Paws. Good to know it's not as hard as I first thought :). The screen is definitely done, my mates actually smashed the LCD display, wrestling(lol), so all I can see now is cracks and a shatter-like pattern all through the screen. Will get myself a new display ASAP and will watch that YouTube video. Once again, thank you :) Cheers, Locky
yes i've replaced a screen for a friend, different laptop than yours but it was the only laptop i've ever worked on, first find a good maintenance manual for that specific laptop that shows you step by step dismantling instructions. lots and lots of screws on the one i worked on but was simple enough to do, just be careful with the screens ribbon connector and motherboard socket, can't really explain how it was connected but the socket had like a swivel piece on it that held the ribbon in place after it was slotted in, and that swivel bit is easy to break if you try and force it but opens easy enough if you know how. just remember if you need to force anything then your doing something wrong.
Thanks Terry, Tried opening it last night, seemed easy enough finish it today. I'll remember that I don't need to force anything. Cheers :)
