Hello, While trying to get updated drivers and software for a 2005 Dell A920 printer (which still isn’t working) I downloaded a recommended Norton driver update manager from Dell for the all-in-one-printer. It ran a scan and found 13 devices that needed driver update. When I selected YES to update the driver, they wanted me to purchase the Norton software for $30.00. I’m wondering if this is the reason I am having problems with updating a 2005 XP printer to a 2007 Vista PC? Is there a way I can find device/software that need driver updates on the PC and then update them for free? Thanks for any and all help. Denise
from dells site :- http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19

just select your operating system where it says "refine your results" then below that you'll see "printers" with the number of apps/drivers found next to it, just click on it then download the driver.

here's the instructions for installing them :- http://support.dell.com/support/topics/glo…nt?docid=266371

and you are wise not to pay for any program just to get driver updates, all can be obtained for free.

Hi Terry, I was able to get the driver updated for the printer. Thanks a gazillion. On that Norton scan there were other devices that it said needed updating, like the Realtek audio. Is there a tool that I can use to tell me which devices need driver updates and where do the updating? Thanks again, Denise
sorry, no i can't say i know of any free tool that will tell you what drivers need updating and give you links on where to get them. to be honest where drivers are concerned if everything works then i wouldn't worry about them, your windows operating system will update anything that needs updating for security reasons, as long as you have the auto updates turned on.
 for what Terry said. Updates… even updates for Windows operating system, are designed to fix something very specific, that may or may not apply to your own hardware/software/system configuration. *** except those rated my Microsoft as "critical updates or patches" that are necessary to prevent an potential exploit. When it comes to hardware and device drivers, it is as Terry says. If the device (audio, graphics, network interface, etc.) is working on your machine, it will continue working with current drivers. It is only when you may have upgraded hardware that you may need a new driver. Therefore, follow the age-old wisdom… If it ain't broke, don't be fixin' on it. :P
after a bit more thought, probably the best place to go is pcpitstop here :- http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/default.asp

and run their overdrive test, you don't need to create an account or give any details to run it, just scroll down to the bottom of the link and click on the "run overdrive anonymously", you will need to allow it to install an activex program to wok and it also needs to be run using internet explorer and not some other web browser like firefox.

as far as updating drivers tho,
follow Dougs advice "If it ain't broke, don't be fixin' on it."
so i really wouldn't worry about them, but if it recommends updating any software like java or flash etc then those i'd update for security reasons.

this is one of our techs guides ( Ztruker ) that he uses when he needs more information about a persons pc, note tho you don't need to create any accounts just run it anonymously like i said above but if you want us to review the test and your results i believe you will need to create an account because the anonymous results get deleted after a short while so the link stops working and we may not get to see them.

Please Run the PCPitstop Full Tests, here: PCPitstop Full Tests

You must use Internet Explorer as it needs to install an ActiveX program.

Note: Vista/Windows 7 users with UAC must first Right-click IE - Select "Run as Administrator"

If you haven't already registered, Click - Sign up now! (left hand column in User Login)

Register and create a password
Accept the ActiveX component to allow your machine to run the Full Tests
Registering and accepting the ActiveX are both SAFE and FREE.

The Full Tests take less than 5 minutes for most machines.

Once you have your Results, please post the URL (the http:// stuff) back here into this thread for review.

Note: Vista/Windows 7 users, please close your instance of IE "Running as Administrator" after you are finished reviewing your Results.

Caution: During the testing of Video Adapter, a variety of patterns, shapes, colors and text are “flashed” onto the users monitor screen. In the many thousands of daily uses of the PCPitstop Full Tests over several years, two individuals who suffer epilepsy experienced discomfort and temporary dizziness when viewing the flashing patterns.

If you know that you are susceptible to photo driven seizure, please look away from your screen during the Video Adapter testing sequence.

Note: The PCPitstop Full Tests Results is a free service, but is supported by various paid product advertisements for utilities that "could" remedy the OP's problem.

Since this site is a "free-help" forum, we do not recommend or endorse purchase of automated utilities, and will assist you in manually correcting any problems and settings necessary to optimize your machine's performance. Ask your questions here. We'll help you walk through any necessary steps.
