Ghost device won't disappear

I've been having this issue with a ghost device that won't seem to be completely removed no matter how many times I uninstall it in the device manager. The device in the device manager shows up as SM Bus Controller in other devices. Whenever I start up windows, the add new hardware wizard window comes up and I have to hit cancel. This is because I have an external IDE/SATA connector that has a power plug and a USB cable. I can connect to SATA and IDE hard drives that are normally installed in the computer. When I first tried this connector out, I didn't realize I need to plug everything in before I turn on the computer. I had plugged it in with a hard drive after the computer was already on and in windows. I have tried to show all hidden devices and tried to remove, still would not remove. I went in to environment variables and inserted a script "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" and added the value of 1 to show all non present devices. I even tried removing the ghost device through an application called Ghostbuster which did not work either. Any thoughts on how to remove this ghost device?
