Vista - all icons have disappeared from my desktop

I still seem to be able to access all my programs via the start menu but I have no idea why they have disappeared or how to get them back. Tried a system restore but still no icons. Anybody got any idea what has happened and what I could do to retore the icons? Any help would be much appreciated.
