hi, got a funny problem: everytime i open a folder to view files, after a couple of seconds my window/desktop crashes, then restarts with missing icons in the taskbar(the bar lower right corner). after numerous scans and cleanings with no success, i wanted to use system restore. i tried several restore points, but every attempt led to an unsuccessful restore :-(, and i cannot open any folder without its window and desktop crashing :-( HELP please!!!
it appears only to happen(the crashing) when viewing or right-clicking avi files.
i am using xp/pro with sp3.

Edit: I deleted your second identical post. Z
Windows tries to generate thumbnails from movies, avi/mpeg/etc. Try turning that off and see if the problem is resolved: Use ShellExView to disable 'Video Thumbnail Extractor.'

You can delete HKCR\CLSID\{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590} to get rid of thumbnail previews but keep the summary details in the properties tab.

You can also delete HKCR\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandle to disable display of summary details in the properties tab.

Before doing any of the above, please backup your registry. See here: ERUNT - How to backup and restore the registry

Since your System Restore is not working, I would delete all existing restore points then create a new one. The only way I know of to do this is to Disable System Restore then Enable it again.

XP:
Open Control Panel then System
Click on System Restore tab
Check the Turn off System Restore on all drives box then click Apply. All restore points will be deleted.
When done, uncheck the box and click Apply again. A new restore point will be created.

Vista/Windows 7:
Open Control Panel then System
Click on Advanced System Protection at left
Click on the System Protection tab
Check the Turn off System Restore on all drives box then click Apply. All restore points will be deleted.
When done, uncheck the box and click Apply again. A new restore point will be created.

If you made any changes to System Restore you will need to make them again.
