Creating a new thread for the third system(call it PC #3, an HP Pavilion desktop) in this neighbor's house that seems infected, but decided to run the three tools you mentioned for PC #2 on this one, too, though it did not have the same exact symptoms as PC #2 (confused yet). Yes, I KNOW now I broke the WTT rule "don't run tools without WTT staff telling you to" (or something like that)
PC #2 thread is here (http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?act=post&do=reply_post&f=27&t=120767)
This system is (PC #3) is a Vista system with SP2. It has been running slooooow and choking on web page/site access
I booted in Safe Mode and ran
rkill - completed OK with log
ASWMBR - completed OK with log
DDS.scr - completed OK with log
Rebooted system and it comes up with something like a "internal drive failure - please insert system disc to continue" message. Yikes!
User had not created Recovery Discs for this system, ever - so grabbing for straws, I booted to Recovery Discs created for the user's PC #1 (HP laptop). Message eventually came up saying something like "can't use these discs to recover this system", YET the system booted into Safe Mode just fine!!!! Rebooted system to Normal Mode and logged in with user's account (admin priviledges). System took a very long time (in my estimation) to get to a desktop, all the while running a process or two that literally hogged all the CPU. Process eventually finished and the system rebooted to same error message "internal drive failure . . . " Have tried to do the Recovery Disc trick again but to no avail. Looking at slaving the drive into another system, backing it up and reinstalling Vista (oh, lord! Hep me!).
Somehow it seems like an MBR issue, maybe??
I know I broke several WTT rules in this process (don't run the tools unless/except we tell you to) and may need to reap the consequences of that.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
