Hello WTT Team,

As I posted in the introductions forum (http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=117522) I'm having some issues with my computer. It was suggested that I have the team look at my outputs of your diagnostic tools to see if there are any malware issues on the computer. I probably know a little more than the average person about computers and processes, but am by no means a 'power-user'.

I guess I'll start with a list of the issues that are currently on my computer (a Lenovo T-Series laptop, purchased in 2008). Some of them are software-based, but I don't know if they are related to malware. If nothing else, having more information can't hurt:
  • My internet just started having connectivity issues last night where it would start up for 10 minutes then hang up. This happened after installing MalwareBytes and removing the rogue 'System Tool'.
  • Excel won't load a file by double clicking on it, I need to open files by first opening Excel then File > Open (Office '07 - purchased)
  • The startup time after entering my password is really slow. It seems to just stop for a while and take a break before continuing startup.
  • To access my external hard drive, I have had to set up a shortcut which takes me past the main destination ("E:/Photos", instead of just "E:/"). The shortcut works fine, it's just annoying that I can't just double click on the 'My Computer' icon.
  • I just got the rogue 'System Tool' off of my computer on Wednesday night, using some information from this website.
As you have in your introduction posts, the more that you know, the easier it is to diagnose the problems, so here's as much extra information that I can come up with:

  • The ZoneAlarm firewall is starting as a process when I start my computer, but it doesn’t load to my tray down where the clock shows up. In the DDS Scan it shows as disabled, but what I did after startup was I ended the process and then tried to start the program again.
  • There is a process on my computer that I didn't recognize, ‘jtv.exe’. I can’t find a website which looks reliable that tells me what this process is. One website (www.superantispyware.com) says that it’s a Trojan (“Trojan.Agent/Gen-CDesc[NewF]”), but that’s only one source, and I don't know if it's a reputable website.
  • I also had four instances of svchost.exe running in my processes showing on Task Manager (one that was a Network process, and three that were system processes). I hear this is OK, but I wanted to make sure.
  • After getting the SystemTool off of the computer, I started removing all of the inactive software that was on my machine. Things that I remember taking off: Sage Simply Accounting 2008 - Student Edition, Google Chrome, Google Updater.
  • After reading about conflicting software on one of the forums, I took Malwarebytes off of my computer last night. It was a longshot, and in the end didn't solve any of the problems.

I decided to run the three different scanning software that are mentioned in some of the intro articles to give as much information as I can right off the bat.

My dad is a computer programmer, but we wanted to get some additional help with getting my computer figured out. The plan is to really go after this on Saturday. I'm amazed at what your team can find in the system diagnosis software outputs! Thanks to everyone on the team looks at this, we really appreciate it!

PS - If anyone can find any additional software that looks illegitimate, please let me know so I can remove it from my machine. As stated in my introduction forum, I used to download stuff, but have stopped and am working to remove all of the illegitimate software from my computer. Thank you.

Delete everything in these two folders and then delete the folders

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\nJiBhLf15406
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\oAhDnHc15406

Reboot and let me know how it's running.
Hey, so I deleted the folders, and nothing changed. Zone Alarm is still not starting at startup, and my internet works for 10 minutes and then stops.

One other thing about the internet is weird. I can still ping google.com with the same lag time after the 10 minutes are up. I can also to a full tracert to google.com and it still works after the 10 minutes are up.

In the file attached is four outputs:
  • Ping while downloading podcasts on iTunes
  • Ping after podcasts have downloaded, before 10 minutes are up
  • Ping after 10 minutes passed, after firefox stops being able to connect to the internet
  • Tracert after 10 minutes passed

Hope this added information helps, and thank you for the help!

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

XP Users

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Vista Users

To enable the viewing of hidden and protected system files in Windows Vista please follow these steps:

Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
Click on the Start button. This is the small round button with the Windows flag in the lower left corner.

Click on the Control Panel menu option.
When the control panel opens you can either be in Classic View or Control Panel Home view:

If you are in the Classic View do the following:
Double-click on the Folder Options icon.
Click on the View tab.

If you are in the Control Panel Home view do the following:

Click on the Appearance and Personalization link.
Click on Show Hidden Files or Folders.
Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide extensions for known file types.
Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Close all browsers before running ATF: IE, FireFox, etc.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi, I ran the ATF Cleaner by Atribune, then the ComboFix application which gave me the output (below).

After startup the following behaviors were noted on my machine:
* Firefox started as a process, but did not load to the tray (this is consistent since I removed the system tool virus).
* I can ping and tracert google.com with the same lag times before and after the network connection shuts down after 10 minutes.
* Excel still does not start up a file by double clicking on it, it loads the program, but not the file I asked it to start up.

Thanks again for your help, I appreciate the time you've put into this already.

Hey, it turned out that it was partly zone alarm. We uninstalled and reinstalled zone alarm, and changed the security setting to medium and everything is working fine. If my security setting is on high, the TCP/IP and Winsock don't work even to ping, but when I put it on medium security, it solved the 10 minute time out thing. Thank you for all of your work looking through the logs. I certainly appreciate all that you've done, and it gives me a lot of comfort that you've given it a clean bill of health! Thank you thank you thank you!
Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

For XP:
  • Click START run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

For Vista / Windows 7
  • Click START Search
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it's impossible to be 100% sure that any machine is clean.

Log looks good :D

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
