Wow! MY P-III really got hit!

Have a second desktop P-III XP Pro SP2 PC that was failing (GPFs) with Kerio's Firewall. I took it off and used XP's built in FW temporarily until I could research and buy another one. It only took one day. Foolishly, I launched an attachment from a known email partner and I got stung big time. HJT log appears below. HJThis also came up with it's own error which I will email off to the author per the instruction. I've attached this error log to the bottom just in case.

Also, I just ran Ewido 4.0 Free and it found 240+ infected items from cookies all the way up to trojans. I thought my system was pretty clean until this happened. When I asked Ewido to clean it refused Quarantining with a "Error in Quarantining" note next to the very first entry (Worm.Locksky.ao) and then reported "Something bad happened to Ewido…". Then Windows reported Ewido had to be closed. So that's where I am at this point. Appreciate the time effort it takes to keep this excellent site delivering what is a very useful service.

That's it! This looks like it could be a lot of work to resolve - I've got my sleeves rolled up…
Download combofix.exe from the link below:

Combofix.exe

Save it to your desktop.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run combofix.

When finished, it will produce a log for you.

Post that log in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis! log.
:)

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Here are the results as you requested. Thanks for jumping in on this one. ComboFix found a few in addition to what Ewido's scan (I didn't repair anything) found…

Hi - there's a problem with rpcc.dll. In safe mode, it's locked meaning that there is another process using it and it can't be deleted. I even went to a command prompt (DOS emulator) in safe mode and tried it there but it's locked. All the other "junk" is gone - cleared out the prefetch and the recycle bin just to be sure. Do we need to get rid of rpcc.dll and how do we go about that? H

And, I'm standing by…. In order to del rpcc.dll, I could try to boot from one of the current "Tiny" versions of XP that runs from CD, if you think that would help. Just trying to think ahead…

Will wait to hear.

New malware items are now present.
:(

Download Killbox from here:

Killbox.zip © Option^Explicit

Unzip it, but don't run it yet.

Copy the file names in the quote box below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing
C (hold the key down, then press C):

c:\windows\sachostx.exe
c:\windows\system32\_mzu_stonedrv7.exe
c:\windows\system32\_mzu_stonedrv8.exe
c:\windows\system32\dwdsregt.exe
c:\windows\system32\rpcc.dll

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sachost] C:\WINDOWS\sachostx.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{8E-E4-4F-FC-ZN}] C:\windows\system32\dwdsregt.exe GEN001

O23 - Service: Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Service.exe (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked", and close Hijack This!

Now, please go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit < Enter > (or click OK)

In the Name column look for:

Service

< Double-click > it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Service.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

Run Killbox.

In Killbox select "Delete on Reboot".

Click File (in the upper left of Killbox), and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
OK Micah - I think I've done very well here. While waiting for you to get back…

I was able to del rpcc.dll - I set BIOS to look for the CD-ROM as first boot dev, mounted a copy of HIREN's boot disk and used it's DOS utility pak to use only the CD-ROM. In this mini-DOS environment I nav'ed to C:\win\sys32 and del rpcc.dll worked perfectly. Did a thorough search and I believe I've zapped it. Here's a fresh HJT - sans RPCC.dll. Bet we're going to zap the R020 entry for it next and I bet we're going to zap the O21 - SSODL: XZYBmER - {3858E4FD-92F2-4E57-3BF3-D18A65C27550} - (no file) entry as well. I'm also looking at that O23 - Service: TCP and UDP Support - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcpip.exe (file missing) entry too - I think that's a baddie. Before I go any further, let's hear from you.

How'd I do??? :-)

OHH NO!!! While setting up my last reply, you were adding your last. Let me STOP right now and let's see if I can just be patient and wait for you to see what I did so we can continue. My sincerest apologies!!!! Please forgive me!!! Hoib.
This is all you have left to do.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O20 - Winlogon Notify: rpcc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Service.exe (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot.

You can check to see if any of the bad files in your last post are present.
:)
Perfect! Five additional questions:

Should I remove the 021 entry for SSODL? I can see some Google results indicating this is evidence of a trojan.

Should I remove the 023 entry for TCP/UDP Support - unknown owner - …..(file missing)?

Should I remove the extra R0 entry for the Comcast "home page" call?

I see two strange entries at R9 for the "HappyToFind" toolbar that I don't recognize. I think this is a baddie because I see this: http://www.xblock.com/product_show.php?id=3157

Once these are out, should I set a fresh restore point? Good idea or bad idea?

Also, just FYI, I note this old P-III boots WAY faster now!!! Good news all around!

Yes. I missed that one.

Should I remove the 023 entry for TCP/UDP Support - unknown owner - …..(file missing)?

I believe so. At first I thought it was a valid program. After further review I have changed my mind about that entry.

Should I remove the extra R0 entry for the Comcast "home page" call?

If you don't want it as the "Homepage", that would be OK.

Needs removed.

Once these are out, should I set a fresh restore point? Good idea or bad idea?

Excellent idea.
:)
Hey!!! I think we're done. Looking nice and clean! And, wow - this thing is "popping" off the table! What a difference in performance - 21 secs from cold boot to the fully operational desktop! Seriously on fire (comparatively speaking of course) :-) As a further diagnostic against future crud, I've not only set the restore point but also saved the lastest cleaned HJT log so I can now go back and compare on a periodic basis. I'm going to do this on all my comps as well. Also, I have now bookmarked your website @ unspyme. Very nicely done. Donation on the way. Hoib
