Wireless Going Out

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows Vista. A few days ago, I started having a problem where my wireless will go out. The light next to the Wireless Lan switch will none be on, and restarting and turning the switch on and off have no effect. When I check the driver, it states that the wireless device is working properly. I know it is not a problem with the internet or router, since other computers on the network are having no problems.
I had Sony help me with the problem, and they took over my desktop and fixed it, but they never told me what the problem was or what caused it (beyond stating that the wireless settings had changed). When it was fixed, however, my AVG free and Adaware would no longer run and they would not uninstall. Re-installing both of these caused the same problem again, so I had to restore the computer and then go through a series of crazy steps to uninstall both of these programs. I also had problems with Tivo Desktop, and had to reinstall it to get it to run again. I had made no major changes on my computer (installing programs, etc) before the problem started, and the computer will run fine for awhile before the wireless goes out. I have no idea if this might be a virus or malware, but I thought I would post the problem and Hijack this log here to see if that might be the problem.

I must admit that this doesn't sound like a malware problem and therefore you will be better served by posting in the Window forum and letting the Tech Team have a shot at solving the problem… but first, let's stir things around a bit.

First off… it looks like you have AVG and Avast running. Bad idea. You need to have one and only one AV running. Please uninstall one of them.

Then… let' get a different log.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.

I thought I had uninstalled AVG. As I said, something that was done to fix my problem made AVG completely nonfunctional. I had to use an uninstaller program to uninstall AVG because using the uninstall function through AVG or through the control panel would not work. I guess I still have some remnants of AVG on the computer, in spite of having uninstalled it. Thank you for any help you can provide. Here is the log: ================= FIREFOX =================== . You have µTorrent, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

I would recommend that you uninstall µTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

Using Add or Remove Programs… please try to uninstall the following:
AVG 2011
Java™ 6 Update 7
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6
Norton 360

Then please run a different tool..

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.


Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

I uninstalled the Java programs. Neither AVG 2011 or Norton 360 appear in my list of programs in the add/remove programs window.

Having said that it was running fine, my wireless went out again this evening (the light on the Wireless LAN went out and I no longer had connectivity). Restarting it seems to have fixed the problem, although before it would sometimes come back on and then go out again.

I was hoping that cleaning up some of the AVG garbage on your system might make it respond a little quicker. Guess not. :(

I do not think you have a malware problem. I think it's time for you to give the Tech Team a try by posting in the Windows Forum. When you post there, please explain your problem again and also provide a link back to this thread so that they can see the information you have posted here.

But first… we need to clean up a little.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.
