Hi, I've been over at the virus/malware forum and Cat helped me clean up the PC. However it's now having issues with other tasks. I am not able to access Windows update site. A small yellow triangle with an exclamation point appears in the lower left corner and the page is blank. Also when I try to access my router, the page is blank except for the Linksys name and blue colors. I checked the network and its ok. I can access the router page and windows update page from a wireless laptop. The PC is hard wired to the router. I have tried disconnecting the modem, router and plugging them back in again in order but that didn't work. The audio hardware will disappear from the PC when its rebooted. I have to roll back the driver to get it to work. This is puzzling at best. I tried reinstalling XP from a disc and the files load, but then it crashes with a BSOD. If I were playing chess, I'd say its close to checkmate. Not many moves left that I can see. Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? All the hardware is about 2 years old. Running XP SP3 and it's been really fine until I ran into this malware issue. Thanks… Taz
Do you have a link to the other thread with your problems? Also for your network issues, have you tried unplugging it from the router and trying to make a connection directly to your modem (avoiding any issues from the middle man)
Hi… Since it has been a while since I posted this, a few things have been fixed. It seems when I contacted CA to uninstall and reinstall my AV software, it cleared up a LOT of what was going on. I have been able to connect to the Internet, access Windows update site and actually run the PC. However, my PC has been crashing and through trial and error I have narrowed it down to the integral sound driver in the ASUS MB. Specifically the driver. When I boot up, its a guess as to whether the sound is on or missing a driver. Also it sometimes crashes the system citing AdiHDAUD.sys as the cause. I have tried deleting the file in the registry and in the system but it still seems to be picking it up from somewhere. So bottom line is right now the sound driver is the culprit crashing the system. I just don't know which driver is actually doing it. The driver/manufacturer is Analog Devices who no longer manufacture or support the hardware. This is an integral system in my ASUS P5Q-E MB so it's presenting a bit of an issue. I suppose if it becomes intolerable or unrepairable I could always add a sound card and disable this system but I'd rather not. I'm not sure how to add a link to this thread. If you could clue me in, I'd be happy to do it. Thanks, Taz
When I run Who's Crashed, here's the result I get: Crash Dump Analysis ——————————————————————————– Crash dump directory: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump Crash dumps are enabled on your computer. On Sun 8/14/2011 11:07:24 PM GMT your computer crashed crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini081411-01.dmp This was probably caused by the following module: adihdaud.sys (ADIHdAud+0x1798A) Bugcheck code: 0x1000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFFFFFA566198A, 0xFFFFFFFFBA52F9DC, 0xFFFFFFFFBA52F6D8) Error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\adihdaud.sys product: SoundMAX Digital HD Audio Driver company: Analog Devices, Inc. description: High Definition Audio Function Driver Bug check description: This indicates that a system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch. This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: adihdaud.sys (High Definition Audio Function Driver, Analog Devices, Inc.). Google query: adihdaud.sys Analog Devices, Inc. SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M Hope this helps… Taz
Download and Run the SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio package, from CNET Download.com

http://download.cnet.com/SoundMAX-Integrat…0_4-207821.html

the above procedure will not hurt your system.
the worst that can happen is that the download/install will not solve your problem.

The best that can happen is that since it is the Asus_SoundMax_Audio_Driver_5.10.01.4570.exe audio driver installation pack for XP systems, it will install all of the correct drivers and files over top of your existing fragments and corrupted driver files.

Let us know how that works for you.

Congrats and good work, regarding clearing up issues with your CA AV.

Best Regards
Doug, I found that download but hesitated to put it in since the one I have is ver 5.10.1.6480 dated 3/20/2008 which seemed to be newer than that one. Will this one overwrite the current version? JIm Ok…I downloaded it and it told me that the version I have was a newer one and that I need to delete it to install this one. I also noticed that this version was used by HP. Does that affect anything since this isn't an HP PC? Do I proceed to follow the instructions on this?
The one you presently have installed isn't working. Try installing the one I linked. If it refuses to install because you have a more recent version, then consider Uninstalling the more recent version via Device Manager. Then install the one I linked.
Well I uninstalled the version I had and downloaded the one from the link. Unfortunately, when it went to install it tells me that this software isn't compatible with my hardware. Any ideas when I can get compatible software for this? I don't remember when or when I got the last download that did work…..had to be over a year ago or so. :pullhair:
Thanks for letting us know, Taz. Glad you got it sorted. For benefit of others who may search for the same or similar, where did you find the driver that eventually worked? Thanks
I actually ended up subscribing to DriverMax. They had the driver there. It startles me to find out that these manufacturer's are no longer supporting their products but rather selling the updates to a 3rd party. As for the ASUS site, the links are empty so no drivers there. At least that's what I found anyway…..
