PC Says I'm Connected?

Hi, Can someone please assist me with connecting to the internet. My laptop says I'm collected but when I click on IE, it gives me the message that the webpage is not available. I have Windows Vista Home Premium Sevice Pack 2. Memory (RAM) 2.00 GB. AMD Athlon Dual-Core QL-62 2.00GHz. System type: 32-bit Operating System

Click on Start then Run and paste the following into the Run box, exactly as shown, including double quotes:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close.

That will tell us if you are truly connected to the internet or not.

I'm communicating to you on someone else's laptop. I can't get online with mines. I did click on Start and typed the info in th ecomman prompt. However, I can't copy and paste the info from the report as it is on my laptop and I can not access the internet.

If you do Tether your cell phone then see here for How to remove PDAnet

Also try pinging yahoo.com by it's IP address from a Command Prompt: ping 69.147.125.65

If that works then there is some kind of DNS problem going on.

Hi, Ztruker! I just got the chance to uninstall all but one of the tunnel adapters. I also tried to ping yahoo. Not sure what I was suppose to report back from that though.

I bought my laptop from Bestbuy and the Geek Squad set-up my internet service through Verizon. Wondering if the fact that I was using Verizon Wireless' Air card up until a couple of weeks ago would be affecting my actual wireless connection. Far as I can remember, I could never go to the coffee shops or McDonald's and get online with my wi-fi. Not sure if Verizon's software is blocking my actual wi-fi access. Do I need to uninstall their software from my laptop?

If you are not using the Verizon card any more then definitely uninstall the software for it. May help. I see that the ping of yahoo.com worked this time though, didn't the previous time so that means your internet connection is working and DNS name resolution is working.

The internet only works when I plug the ethernet card to it. I am trying to figure out why I keep getting the "page won't display message" That little blue triangle never shows up on the 2 computer icons at the bottom of the screen. When I hover over the 2 computers at the bottom of the taskbar, it says I'm connected but I keep getting the this page won't display message and after that I tried unplugging the router and a couple of the other suggestions I got when I click on the "diagnose connection problems" tab.

Open Services and see if WLAN Autoconfig is set to Automatic and Started. If not, make it that way. Click Start, type services.msc and press Enter. Scroll down to WLAN Autoconfig. If it's stopped or set to disable or manual, double click on it. Set Startup Type to Automatic and click Start. Reboot and see if wireless works.

It was already set to wireless, but it still doesn't work. I also tried to connect to linksys from someone else that showed up on my laptop and the wireless worked fine. That was an unsecured setup.

Did you try using the Windows "Wireless Network setup wizard"? If you have an existing computer that is connected to the wireless, it will allow you to migrate your settings to a new computer using a flash drive (I had the same problem with a new computer and finally came across this, it walks you through the process). Go to "Control Panel", then click "Wireless network setup wizard" (not "Network Setup Wizard", that's something else)
