CPU running close to or at 100% due to svchost.exe

I uninstalled java (although that older version is still in the list of programs) and downloaded java to the desktop. I then clicked on the javafix.exe link you posted but got the following message: Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information. The error returned was: Sorry, but you do not have permission to use this feature. If you are not logged in, you may do so using the form below if available. I am logged in and I could not find any further information in the help files. Therefore, I have not run the installation program. To my knowledge, the only Lavasoft product I have installed is Ad-Aware which I manually run to check for adware/spyware. I opened the program and looked - Ad-watch Live is not enabled, so I don't know how it could be running and interfering with my ESET AV program. I disabled an additional number of the add-ons listed in the "manage add-ons" section of the tools menu. However, I'm not sure how that will affect installed programs. Is there a way to tell what each of those add-ons actually does? I had also previously run startup lite and also disabled some of the BHOs (same question as add-ons: how can I tell what I'm disabling here?) I will look into adding memory. The CPU (svchost.exe) is behaving at the moment. Thanks

Hello slpera,

Try this download HERE Save it to your Desktop, then double click with the LEFT mouse button to run the file. After the file completes, install the newer java version as stated earlier.

If that doesn't work you can then try this:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder.
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Oracle Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button.
  • Scroll down to the Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) option.
  • Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.(version 6, update 25)

Once you get Java fixed, you can delete these files you have downloaded to your desktop.

To answer your question, since Ad-watch Live is not enabled the ESET program is fine if you are comfortable with it.

Is there a way to tell what each of those add-ons actually does?

In general, they all extend your web browser feature set in some way. You would need to visit each program's website to get specific information on what each add-on does. The same is true for the Browser Helper Objects.

Please let me know how things are working with Java and any other questions you may have.

Hi Astabi, The first link you gave me in your last response worked and that extra Java 6.7 is no longer in my list of programs (hooray!). I did a restart and that svchost.exe had again "taken over" the CPU, so under startup on msconfig I took the HP solution center (plus a few other things) off the start menu, deleted an old printer from the printers list and after the restart the CPU is now back to a low percentage level. Hopefully, we've gotten everything resolved. Thanks for all of your (and your consultants') help! Sue

Hi Astabi,
The computer still seems to be running ok for the most part, but as you can see, I must still be having an issue with java. When I'm using java apps (specifically Pogo games, that I know of, the computer will freeze for awhile and then one of these messages is generated to my desktop. Should I switch to a different "department" to get this sorted out?

Hi

Astabi is away for the week, so I'm helping out.

Let's try removing all traces of Java completely from your system

Go into your Browsers and remove any Java add-ons you may have

in FireFox go to Tools > Add-ons > Extensions/Plug-ins locate any Java add-ons and click disable or remove them if you have that option

In I.E > Click Tools > Manage add-ons > Toolbars and Extensions > Select the Java add-ons then click Disable or remove them if you have that option


NEXT


Download and install the Revo Uninstaller
  • Double click the new Revo Uninstaller icon on your desktop to start the program
  • Scroll through the listed programs and Right Click on the program you wish to uninstall (Java)
  • From the pop out menu choose Uninstall
  • Click Yes to the confirmation dialogue
  • In the next window select the Advanced mode
  • Click Next to start uninstalling the program
  • Answer Yes to confirm the uninstall
  • When the program has completed the four steps, click Next to allow the program to search for leftovers
  • Once complete, click Next, then Finish


Now search for any Java folders in your program files and delete them


Now run ATF Cleaner


Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    • If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

not sure what is causing the Java issue to be honest, I think the best thing to do now is have you start a new thread in our software forum we have an absolute Java genius there - appleoddity, who should be able to sort out the Java issues for you, I'll send him a PM and ask him to watch for your post.

  • Download TFC to your desktop
    • Close any open windows.
    • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
    • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
    • Click the Start button to begin the process.
    • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
    • The program should not take long to finish it's job
    • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
    • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it.
