CPU running close to or at 100% due to svchost.exe

Things were going along fairly smoothly until I allowed a bunch of updates yesterday afternoon. Since then the CPU has been almost constantly at 100% with the main culprit being svchost.exe. Using Process Explorer, that particular svchost item is pml driver HPZ12. We did get a new HP printer, but not just today, and things have been running ok with it up til now. I went into the services tab and disabled both pml driver HPZ12 and net driver HPZ12 and rebooted, but then when I tried to open a game window using java (specifically at Pogo.com), my computer rebooted and I got a "blue screen warning". I ran a scan with my ESET NOD32 and found the following:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{A0FF62EF-9DDB-4AB5-895A-7038BF04C854}\RP2648\A0178467.exe » WISE » WxBug.EXE Win32/Adware.WBug.A application was a part of the deleted object
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{A0FF62EF-9DDB-4AB5-895A-7038BF04C854}\RP2648\A0178467.exe » WISE » WxBug.EXE » WISE » MiniBugTransporter.dll Win32/Adware.WBug.A application was a part of the deleted object
The scan took almost 6 hours.
At this point I did a system restore back to the day before. I also uninstalled and reinstalled java, although there is a version of java (6-7 I think it was) listed in my list of programs that I could not remove.
The ESET startup scan then alerted me to this:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{A0FF62EF-9DDB-4AB5-895A-7038BF04C854}\RP2648\A0178467.exe Win32/Adware.WBug.A application deleted - quarantined Event occurred on a file modified by the application: C:\WINNT\system32\svchost.exe.

So, that pile of updates (25 of them!) is now wanting to be installed again, having gone back to a point previous to my letting them update yesterday, but the 100% CPU problem is still there. I posted this message under hardware, thinking the printer was causing the problem and "paws" suggested I use this board instead.

My computer is a Gateway Pentium R 4 CPU 2.40GHz 512 MB RAM Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3
The printer in question is an HP Office Jet 4500 G510 n-z
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
Sue

Hello Astabi, Thanks for your reply. Please be advised that I will be away from my computer having the issues until Sunday evening, so there will be a delay in getting those scans done and the information you requested posted back here. In the meantime, how do I tell if I do have any script blocking protection, and what it is and where to find it to disable it? Sue
Hello,

Please be advised that I will be away from my computer having the issues until Sunday evening

No problem, I'll wait to see your posts, thanks for letting us know!

how do I tell if I do have any script blocking protection, and what it is and where to find it to disable it?

Try either or both the links I gave you to run DDS. If the programs runs and gives you logs, your are all set. If not, please take note of the program which is blocking the DDS software and I will then tell you how to disable it.

Thanks,
Astabi
Attached/included are the files you requested. I need you to know also, that when I started up my computer from being away, it downloaded those updates I'd been holding off on. I have not, however, allowed it to do the restart to finish installing them until I hear from you. I don't think I can keep saying no to the restart, though, so it will probably automatically restart soon. I just checked the running processes, too, and now the CPU usage is no longer at or near 100%.

Hello,

Please do the following;

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <– very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Then,

http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
Click the green ESET Online Scanner button.
Read the End User License Agreement and check the box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click on the Start button next to it.
You may receive an alert on the address bar that "This site might require the following ActiveX control…Click here to install…". Click on that alert and then click Insall ActiveX component.
A new window will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?"".
Answer Yes to download and install the ActiveX controls that allows the scan to run.
Click Start.
Check Remove found threats and Scan potentially unwanted applications.
Click Scan to begin.
If offered the option to get information or buy software. Just close the window.
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Next,

Get rid of non-essential start-up programs. They will still work fine when needed, but won't start up on boot which takes up ram and cpu resources.

You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve performance.

If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

Try this, reboot your computer and let us know how things are running.
Also, provide the ESET online log and MalwareBytes log in your next post.

Thanks,
Astabi
Here are the 2 log files you requested. Although you warn about the Malwarebytes scan taking "some time to finish" it actually didn't take that long, while the eset scan took over 2 hours! When I rebooted the computer I got 2 error messages involving Roxio. I don't remember what one of them was but the other was for Live Share. Said encountered a problem and needed to close and gave me the report the error message window, which is odd since I didn't have them open (having just started up the computer). Other than that, it seems to be running ok. The svchost.exe took up 100% of the CPU after restarting, but stopped after a few minutes. Windows wants to install 13 more updates - 2 critical, 6 recommended and 5 optional. Can I assume it's ok to let it do that now? It apparently installed the 25 the other day with no ill effects. Hello slpera,

You can now install any updates for Windows, as you'll see below.

I have a few recommendations.

First,

You can delete the DDS and aswMBR logs and programs from your desktop.

Then,

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
When prompted, at the Done dialog box, Click OK button

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Then,

All Clean
Congratulations, good work, your system now appears to be clean. Now that your system is safe we
would like you to keep it that way.
Take the time to follow these recommendations & it will greatly reduce the risk of further infections and
greatly diminish the chances of you having to visit here again.

First, you should read the following to understand why you got infected in the first place. Here are some good links:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
http://forum.securitycadets.com/index.php?showtopic=85

System Restore
System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points. Everything that we removed is most likely backed up in this program.

Turn off System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your computer

Turn ON System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Create a new Restore Point <– Very Important

  • Go to Start> All Programs> Assesories> System Tools> System Restore and create a New Restore Point
System Restore Tutorial <– If you need it

Then, I recommend the following:

Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office
products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Install the updates immediately if they are found.
To update Windows
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update
To update Office
Open up any Office program.
Go to Help > Check for Updates

Anti-Virus Software
I see remnants of the ESET NOD32 Antivirus in your log. If you are using this antivirus you need to
make sure it is updated regularly. If you aren't using this antivirus I would recommend Avira Antivirus
which you can get HERE.

SpywareBlaster
Download and install Javacools SpywareBlaster from HERE
SpywareBlaster adds a list of ActiveX controls, tracking cookies and sites which will be blocked in either
Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. You need to manually check for updates regularly.

Malwarbytes Antimalware
You have Malwarbytes installed. This is a malware removal program that is fast and doesn’t use a lot of resources, keep it updated HERE

Spybot Search and Destroy
Spybot Search & Destroy has the Immunize feature which works roughly the same way. Another feature within Spybot is the TeaTimer option. This option immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and terminates them. TeaTimer also detects when something wants to change some critical registry keys and gives you an option to allow them or not.Download it from HERE

Firefox Browser
Firefox is generally more secure than other browsers on the market it was built on a philosophy of security. The Firefox development team has a terrific track record for fixing vulnerabilities often releasing patches with in days of the release of the vulnerability. For windows users it offers a browser that isn't built into the operating system (an enormous security risk) like Internet Explorer. Get it from HERE

Eset Online Scanner
Run a scan as you did earlier for a second opinion every few weeks. HERE

Do you have any other questions or issues?

Thanks,
Astabi
Hi Astabi, First of all, my apologies for delay in responding. Usually I get an e-mail notification that I have a reply here and I didn't get one when you left your last message on Wednesday. Since I performed the last steps you requested I have had the following occur: The day after doing the cleaning steps, my ESET scan produced this message: Object: C:\System Volume Information\restore{A0FF62EF-9DD…\A0181222.exe Threat: Win 32/Adware.WBug.A application Comment: Event occurred on a file modified bynthe application: C:\WINNT\system32\svchost.exe Then today the following error message popped up: Unexpected error: 6/21/11 12:29:15 Intuit update service application error Error report: C:\Documents & Settings\Administration\Local settings\Application Data\PCHealth\Error Report\QSignoff\39154.cab contains the following files: intuitupdateservice.exe.mdmp version.txt mdmpmem.hdmp I hope I got that right - it wouldn't let me copy/paste any of those messages. The only thing I have (I think) from Intuit is Turbotax, so I uninstalled that program today. The computer was fine for awhile, although I noticed that using anything that involves java, and to a lesser extent flash, causes the 100% CPU. And at the moment, svchost.exe is back to causing CPU 100% even though I have nothing extra running. While I'm waiting for your reply I will do some of those additional steps you suggested a couple of messages ago as far as cleaning out the start menu, running defrag, etc. I already have ATF Cleaner downloaded and will also perform the suggestions in your most recent message. Thanks
This is a second consecutive reply to your last post, so please be sure to read the previous one also. I wanted to let you know about the error message that was created last night (6-25-11 at 10:34 PM) hs_err_pid268. SInce it's Java related, would it have anything to do with that Java 6 update 7 that I can't get removed from my computer? When I try to do that I get the message "Internal Error 2753. RegUtils" then, when I click "OK" on that window, I get "Fatal Error During Installation". At that point it is no longer in the Add/Remove list of programs, but if I leave and return, it is back in the list.

My svchost.exe is still causing the CPU to range between 80 and 100% causing everything to run slowly. It took over an hour to run defrag last night.
Hello slpera, lets take another look, please do this:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks,

hi
Sending a couple of things. Since I posted last I disabled all of the add-ons for HP printers and the CPU went back to normal. Then, today, I ran the Combo fix and the part about the restore point reminded me I hadn't gone back and cleared out the old ones, so I did that. Then I downloaded the Spybot S & D (which took FOREVER to run - is that normal?) and the CPU 100% has been going on ever since. I notice it put some add-ons in the list. Could that be where the problem is occurring? Then I ran Combofix again. During the second combofix run, I got the following message:pev.cfxxe has encountered a problem and needs to close, giving me the option of sending an error message. Afterwards, combofix appeared to finish out its scan normally.
The first log is from the first combofix run and log2 is from the second. If Spybot is now causing the CPU problem, I may be uninstalling that real soon, especially as long as it took to run its scan!
Thanks,

Hello slpera,

A member of the Whatthetech.com Tech Team, Appleodity has created a little batch file to combat the problem you are having with java.

Paraphrased from his thread:

  • If you are able, uninstall all previous versions of Java in add/remove programs in your control panel.
  • Next, you may download the current version of Java here: http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
  • I recommend that you use the offline installer version.

    Now, download the fix:Attached File fixjava.zip ( 336bytes ) Number of downloads: 7829
Open the fixjava.zip file, extract and run the file fixjava.bat .
The batch file will run briefly without confirmation.

  • You may now install Java without any errors about it already being installed.

Next,

I see remnants of ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.2 and Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live! Anti-Virus

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. Please choose one antivirus program and remove the others. You also can go with my earlier recommendation of Antivir instead(get it HERE). Only have ONE antivirus program installed, and remove the others.

and finally,

I believe the issues you are having now are due to the amount of RAM installed on your computer. It looks like you have 512MB installed but I believe a minimum of 1GB in my experience is really what you'd need. Having memory resident programs like Spybot's teatimer will really grind your computer to a halt if you have limited memory. Limiting unnecessary programs from your startup as I had recommended will help in this area.

Trimming down your web browser, by getting rid of unneeded toolbars and browser helper objects you don't use will help also.

Please let me know if you have any more questions or concerns after following my recommendations.

Thanks,
Astabi
