Hello,

I'd like to be sure I don't have a rootkit or something on my system. Following this background description is my DDS log.

-Lately, browsers hang and crash, or open (IE) without my request, or are running in the background without showing as a window. Other programs freeze up too, especially Acrobat.
-I've noticed a Filesharing folder (that I don't remember creating) that is only visible (I think) in the Save To window when downloading. Invisible (even with make hidden folders visible) from normal Explorer views.
-when I logged into old user account and tried to connect to a university domain I used to be part of (network was unresponsive), the screen went "blank" (to a generic hp screen) and CTRL-ALT-DEL was non-functional; had to shut it down with the power button.
-Received 2nd notice from Comcast Constant Guard that we have a bot on our home network (spouse has a Macbook with some possibly funny issues; this post is describing the HP laptop on the network). While I've found trojans in the past, none came up this time after running CCleaner, McAfee, Spybot, TrojanHunter.
-With help of a friend from Symantec, ran PC Checkup (no virus, just poor performance) and Power Eraser. Eraser found suspicious processes: HPPlugIn.dll; Itaps.dll; ItVCClient.dll; TrayIcon.dll. The first 3 may be related to Cognizance Identity Manager and the last to PC Anywhere; both of which I was not aware of installing. That Eraser log also had a list of trashy websites under HOSTS_FILE_ENTRIES that I had never visited.
-many svchost.exes and rundll32.exes running

If I'm clean of malware, I'll head over to the Windows forum for help with trimming startup processes, because I know that's a mess (using 60% of memory).

Thanks in advance for any help!

JBM

Hello jbm and welcome to the WTT forum.

My username is Astabi and I would be glad to help you with your computer problem. Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:

Please do not install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
Please do not run any scans other than those requested
Please follow all instructions in the order posted
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
Please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!

Please note that I am still in training and my replies need to be checked by an expert in order for you to receive the best possible advice. This may result in a small delay between my posts but I shall try to keep this to a minimum.

Thanks,
Astabi
Hi Astabi,

Thanks for your reply! I'll be sure to follow the guidelines you mentioned. Is it necessary for me to stop using this computer completely until I've resolved things with you? I need to continue working, and using another computer is only an option for part of the day…

Looking forward to your advice. Thanks,

JBM
Hello jbm,

I would recommend not using your PC until it's clear. If you need to do so, please do NOT install anything, including programs, toolbars, etc.

When you ran DDS, an Attach.txt file was included in the scan, include this file in your next post by doing the following:
Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scrolling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and then click UPLOAD.

Next,

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan
[external image: Posted Image]

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
[external image: Posted Image]

There shall also be a file on your desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) folder. Please attach that zipped file in your next reply.

Please post back with
  • awsMBR log
  • MBR.dat (attached)
  • Attach.txt (attached)

Thanks,
Astabi
Astabi, Thanks for your reply. I apologize, but having no alternatives, I had to continue using this machine for work and paying bills, and did install and uninstall some programs recently, cleaning up afterwards with CCleaner. Please let me know if details of the installs / uninstalls are helpful to you. So I ran DDS again just now, followed by aswMBR as you recommended. Below is the new DDS log. Please see attachments for the aswMBR log and dat file, and the Attach.txt report. I won't make any more changes to the machine until I hear from you, but unfortunately must continue using it… Thanks very much, JBM —- . If offered the option to get information or buy software. Just close the window.
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Can you give me some information about the folder you were talking about? Do you see it under Windows Explorer?

Please provide ESET and MalwareBytes Logs.
Thanks,
Astabi
Astabi,

Thanks for the followup. Pasted below are the logs.

Re the HKEY infected registry data key, could that have anything to do with this incident? Someone I know authorized my computer to connect automatically to his home network when I am there, by finding my hardware key and giving it to his router. I trust him, but wondering if it set up a vulnerability.

Re the usually invisible folder that I think was File Transfer: In my memory, it only appeared on the desktop (main admin user account) when I would open a "download / save to" window. I tested that operation today, but didn't see it this time, checking My Documents and the C drive too. However, when I logged into a years-old user account last week, a File Transfer Settings wizard or something was part of the Start Menu. Not sure if that's related. I would like to eliminate this (and all unnecessary) user accounts when you give the go ahead…

By the way, I deleted the quarantined ESET file when given that option, but did not yet uninstall the program.

Thanks very much for further guidance,

JBM

Hello jbm,

I will help remove the old user accounts after you have completed these instructions and post back letting me know how you made out.

Re the HKEY infected registry data key, could that have anything to do with this incident?

It doesn't look like the registry key was related.

================

All Clean
Congratulations, good work, your system appears to be clean! Now that your system is safe we
would like you to keep it that way.
Take the time to follow these recommendations & it will greatly reduce the risk of further infections and
greatly diminish the chances of you having to visit here again.

First, you should read the following to understand why you got infected in the first place. Here are some good links:

* Create a new restore point

You must be logged on to an administrator account
  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
  • Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point
  • click create
* Remove old restore points

  • Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools.
  • Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run.
  • When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab.
  • On this tab you will find a section for System Restore.
  • If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.
System Restore Tutorial <– If you need it

Then, I recommend the following:

Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office
products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Install the updates immediately if they are found.
To update Windows
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update
To update Office
Open up any Office program.
Go to Help > Check for Updates

Update McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware
Keeping you McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware up to date is critical in keeping you malware free, be sure the software is ding these updates for you automatically or else open the application, click the update tab or button and perform the update manually.

Malwarbytes Antimalware
Now that you have Malwarbytes, keep it updated. Malwarbytes is a malware removal program that is fast and doesn’t use a lot of resources, get it HERE

Firefox Browser
Firefox is generally more secure than other browsers on the market it was built on a philosophy of security. The Firefox development team has a terrific track record for fixing vulnerabilities often releasing patches with in days of the release of the vulnerability. For windows users it offers a browser that isn't built into the operating system (an enormous security risk) like Internet Explorer. Get it from HERE

Now, to take care of the entry on your start menu that isn't wanted:
Click on the Start button and go to the bad entry. When you see the File Transfer Settings wizard entry that you don't want simply right click on the entry to bring up the context menu and select Delete by left clicking the Delete entry from the menu.

Please post back to let me know how you are doing and we'll take care of the user account you don't want.

Thanks,
Astabi
Hello Astabi,

Thanks for the last recommendations.

I updated Java (seems the auto update is not working), checked for lingering old versions (none apparent in Add/Remove Pgms), and cleared the cache.
Deleted aswMBR and DDS. What about ESET?
Checked Internet Explorer (which I avoid like the plague in favor of Firefox) security settings – it appears that IE8 has already improved some of the vulnerable default settings (Active X etc) mentioned for IE6.
Already practice pretty safe internet. To prevent conflict vulnerabilities, I turned off the Windows firewall because McAfee is on. However, for some reason, McAfee's Attack Detection was set to "NO" for all the listed major types of attacks. So I changed that option to "YES" for some of the remote code execution types.
My concerns are possible improper firewall setup (in recent months) in public hotspots, stealthy hackers hanging out on those networks in those public hotspots, and someone possibly hacking our home network in last few months.

Will update the System Restore point as you suggest, check Windows update, and post back. (So far, only one Firefox crash in last several days, which is better.)

Some Qs:
1) With these 2 specific infections found by our malware scans, is it possible / likely this machine had been / is being used as a bot? Should l assume all important (e.g. financial) online accounts might be compromised?

2) Is Malwarebytes faster / lighter but less thorough and constant than Spybot? Should I keep both and if so, what's the best way to use them? TeaTimer is huge…

3) I'm using HP Protect Tools Security (for an extra login layer around the OS) and HP 3D Drive Guard - should I manually update these (it's supposed to be automatic)? Not sure how that partitioned drive was/was not affected by our cleanup work. Considering disabling one / both if more secure that way (but I suppose they still need to be updated if I can't remove them and they aren't being used).

4) Full computer name and domain assigned to this computer still involve a university domain name that I'm no longer part of – for security's sake (mine and the U's), should I change this?

Thanks again for your help!

JBM
Hello jbm,

My answers to your questions:

Deleted aswMBR and DDS. What about ESET?

I wouldn't remove this and would recommend you use ESET as a second opinion scan every few weeks.

1) With these 2 specific infections found by our malware scans, is it possible / likely this machine had been / is being used as a bot? Should l assume all important (e.g. financial) online accounts might be compromised?

I haven't found any evidence to suggest this at all, the signs of infection were very low and the specific infections you had were very minor problems. One was actually an exploit in the older version of java that malware could use to enter your computer. The new version of java has fixed that exploit.

2) Is Malwarebytes faster / lighter but less thorough and constant than Spybot? Should I keep both and if so, what's the best way to use them? TeaTimer is huge…

I would only recommend one memory resident spyware scanner which you have in the McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware suite. See my prior post regarding MalwareBytes. You can also scan using SpyBot but NOT install the memory resident TeaTimer. Malwarebytes, IMHO, is a very good thorough scanner. The free version is non resident and will not use any resources.

I believe your drives are clean as shown in the logs and see no problem with having this program update automatically… except for the fact it's a memory resident utility to give you the convenience of having it done automatically.

4) Full computer name and domain assigned to this computer still involve a university domain name that I'm no longer part of – for security's sake (mine and the U's), should I change this?

I don't see a problem with leaving this as-is.

Any more questions or concerns?

Thanks,
Astabi
