I am running Windows XP Pro,with all the updates Installed ( Version 3 )..I insert a CD ( any cd purchased or home made) the drive
will not do anything…Now if I go to the Drive D: and browse the files that are on the CD I see them ok,and can play it off the drive…
I tried to make sure I have autoplay running,I went and opened the D: drive and made sure that i have autoplay working..
Any help you can provide is appreciated..
I have 2 CD drives and 735 Megs of ram, 250 gig Harddrive, the computer is about 11 years old…I have all the updates that I get
weekly from Microsoft…
This only started about 3 weeks ago…

Hello beck2512,
Sorry to hear you're having problems.
Just to clarify, what exactly are you expecting the computer to do when you put the CD in?
Cheers,
beck2512
Before when I put in a CD it would play the cd,now it sits there, but I know the files are on the CD,as I can go to my compter,
D: drive and play it that way….
I have gone into BIOS and see what is loaded first, and it,s fine…
Before when i put in a CD it played, now Zilch.notta LOL

Hi beck2512,
If you are expecting the CD to autorun or autostart and it is not doing so, make sure your "Shell Hardware Detection" service is set to Automatic.
Go to Start / right click My Computer / Manage / double-click "Services and Applications" / double-click "Services" / Scroll down to "Shell Hardware Detection" / if it is not set to Automatic / right click it and select "Properties" and change the setting to Automatic.
If the above is not the cause of the problem, please go to the Microsoft site The AutoRun feature or the AutoPlay feature does not work when you insert a CD-ROM in the CD drive where you will find several other reasons (and solutions) why autorun or autoplay may not work.
Cheers,
Lee

I tried to do this, however when I get to the part Shell Hardware Detections This comes up:
One or more ActiveX controls could not be displayed because either:
(1) Your current security settings prohibit running activeX controls on this page,or
(2) You have blocked a publlisher of one of the controls.
As a result the page might not display correctly This is a wee box that says this..

This should not be happening. No activeX controls are involved in changing setting in "Services".
It sound's like you might have a Malware problem.
Please start a thread in the Melware section of this forum ("Possible Malware") with a link to this thread.
