Slow Internet + Hacked email

Hello and thanks for reading.

I got a new hard drive, swapped my old files over, and then started downloading all the software that I had previously enjoyed. I think I may have inadvertently downloaded a virus or other nasty thing. I currently have two main troubles.
1) My email was hacked and used to distribute spam. This happened with both gmail and hotmail so I think something is recording my keystrokes.
2) I have general slow internet connectivity. Internet browsing works fine on all other computers in the house. I primarily use Chrome and every time I select a new tab it takes a while to open. Even if I have two open tabs my computer slows when moving between them. Most webpages also take longer than usual to open.

I now only use my desktop when I absolutely have to. I turn it off when I'm not around and during short absences I disconnect my modem cable. Ugh, it sucks being afraid of your own computer.

Per instructions in the Getting Started Post I ran OTL and here are the results:

µTorrent
You have µTorrent, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall µTorrent, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Thanks for responding Tomk. I removed utorrent, disabled all ati-virus/spyware then ran combofix. My internet browsing is already much faster than it has been (I've only checked this site and my email (my email now sends me a one time password via my mobile)). Attached is the ComboFix.txt

Alrighty, this took a while. My internet browsing has slowed once again. I was unable to run the program through IE, the active x pop up never showed. I ran it through chrome but it took a long time, I thought it had crashed one time so I restarted it. JJPhat, There should have been a second log called attach.txt. I'd like to see that also. Would you please re-run the scan and post both logs?
JJPhat,

I'm just not seeing any reason for your internet slowdown. I do not believe it is malware related. You might try posting in the Internet forum and see if the Tech Team has any advice. If you do that, it would be good to include a link back to this thread so they can see the information you have provided.

Meanwhile, lets do some housekeeping,

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

  • Double click on OTL to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
