hey, I'm on a 56k, and my usual download speed is right around 4.75 kbps- 5 is good, anything under 4 is slow... but now all I'm getting is 2.5... what can I do to see what is taking up my download speed? one other time this happened was when Windows Messenger was running in the background.. and my connection speeds have been constant, around 45.2 kbps the only software I can think of that has been downloaded recently are Windows updates and an Adobe upgrade + I have antivirus software and checked for viruses... thanks for any help :]

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.com!

May your day be blessed by those you love and those you love be blessed by HIM. - Coyote

If you have malware running on your machine, it could be slowing it down.

We would need a Hijack This! log file to check for malware.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Run Hijack This!

Click "Scan".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Click "Save log".

Reply to this thread, and post the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread.

Someone will examine it for you. :)

First, you should go back to my first post and re-read about making a folder for Hijack This!

You have in running in a "temp" folder. It makes logfiles and BACKUPS (which may come in handy). The backups can get deleted if they reside in a "temp" folder.

Second, unfortunately, I don't see a much that would slow your download. You don't seem to have an abundance of malware as I had suspected. But there are a few things that could be "fixed".

You do have a CoolWebSearch infection. That may be part of your problem.

Please download CWShredder from the link in my signature.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND PROGRAMS!!!

Click "Fix" and let it fix what it can.

After moving Hijack This! to a permanent folder, run it and fix

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://server224.sma...t/7search/?hklm

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing)

Fix any of these you do not recognize the URL of as being useful and friendly:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://tprf.org/

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://search.usefulware.com

If you have totally uninstalled Adobe Acrobat from your machine, this is no longer necessary:

O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll

(If you just uninstalled the Acrobat update and not ALL of Acrobat, leave that entry alone)

After fixing all you need to fix, reboot and post a new log file.

Just an "FYI", I have 56K modem, and my connection speed is almost always 46K. I can't say I do a lot of downloading, so I really can't recall what speed that executes at.

I really don't see any "smoking gun" (except maybe the CWS infection) in your log file that would slow you down. But maybe the fixes you have made will help. :)

thanks for the reply; Sorry about the folder, I guess I followed the instructions in the tutorial, cause I followed SOMETHING that told me to put it there... :) but I'm pretty dense about computers ;) OK, the folder is now where it needs to be. Also, I remembered that I also recently downloaded DB power amp music converter, a FLAC converter- and audio CD input... they were free, so we'll see what happens trying to erase them... thanks for the help  Also, the link to CWShredder isnt working for me..

This is easy. A regular 56k modem is pretty slow to begin with. If you are downloading too many or full size pictures, any Flash content, looped animations, instant song launches, or an abundance of animated gifs, your connection is going to be very slow. I suggest turning off your modem for 40 minutes, and turning it back on. Avoid the sites with high image content, and use a Flash disabler and popup blocker.

No, Im downloading music, legal music off websites, one which I always go to, then others just to make sure it is not site specific... In the past, every time I downloaded stuff (songs) the rate would be a constant 4 KB/sec - 4.75 good, 4.35 average, anything under 4 poor. the only time this has not been the case was when Windows Messenger was running in the background. So this leads me to believe that something is running in my background, and I want it off! ;)

OK, Ive thought I've followed instructions 2 or 3 times now, and when I open HJT it still says it is in a temp folder...

what do I do?

Try again to download/run CWShredder. I just tried the link and it worked for me. Then do as instructed in my previous post.

Hey, no telling if this will fix it or not, but it might not matter- I visited a site called majorgeeks.com, which is FULL of freeware on just about EVERYTHING!, and downloaded a program called leechget, and am in the process of downloading my music at an average of about 6 or so KB/sec. Sometimes 7 or 8! It would be nice to know if it would matter or help if it was tip-top WITHOUT leechget, but WTF, it works for me... Also, it has plenty of spyware/adware and TONS of stuff I'm sure you would think was pretty neat, I don't even know waht half that stuff is... thanks for your help, and read Jeremiah 10. NIV. EDIT: this is going to kill me, now the speed is all over the place with nary a 7 or 8 in sight... :weee:
