Do you mean to tell me in order to use MSE you have to have an active internet connection. I downloaded it to give it a try and it will not allow me to run a scan because it wants to check for updates first, this not to good.
Jimmy, I just ran MSE on one of the kids Windows 7 Pro machines. I first carefully made sure that the wireless connection was disconnected, and I pulled the ethernet. So no internet connection. Scan was prompt and successful. It is possible that since MSE was already up-to-date, that it didn't run into the same demand that your machine may have. I'll let it sit disconnected for 24 hours and then try to run a scan, then report back. Doug

Just tryed it again 9:00 am CST, Go figuar, the warnning was: Big red X and Red update box with the msg: Microsoft Security Essentials requires up-to-date virus&spyware definitions, You"ll need to install the lastest definition updates before scanning your computer.

Been wanting to get rid of AVG on my computer, so I may try it on my machine without internet connection to see what happens.

If this is the case then IMO thats no good, what if you had not used your computer lets say in 2 weeks or so and when you try to run the program to scan but have no internet connection and the thing hollors no, we need to get all the updates to scan. What then IMO again MS has the choke hold on you and then you are forced to get on the internet to run for scan using that software. I think MS should think about this one, in fact I know a lot of people who hardly use the pc for a long period of time.

But the computer I am trying to install this on that was in the car shop where Preacher former pastor / teacher of mine has his brother in law that goes to church has been restoring a 52 chevy truck and years worth of pitcures on the hard drive some from the looks of it dating back to the late 40's.

But now for some reason when I fired up the machine the usb ports are not working and Windows shows no network settings at all, its like they all have been deleted inside of windows. So I burned MSE to a cd to install it and to run scans and this is what I ran into.

I may have to pull my drive out hook it up to the test machine to run a scan and to copy the pitcures, I got a bad feeling that his windows is messed up or something destoryed a lot of the files in the OS, plus the fact its an old pc with Windows XP Pro, Service pack 2 installed.
OK. Now the rest of the story starts rolling out. :D I presume you are referring to Windows 2000 Pro. If the machine is updated to SP2, then I'm amazed that you could even install MSE, and not surprised at all that MSE won't run. The final Service Pack update for Windows 2000 Pro is SP4. Of course Windows 2000 Pro is now out-of-support… even for SP4. I have a few Windows 2000 Pro SP4 machines, but find that I must use old versions of software, including old Firewall, and old AntiVirus, contemporaneous with the good ole days when Windows 2000 was still within its Microsoft support window and developers were still publishing applications and utilities compatible with Windows 2000 Pro SP4. ______________________________________________ Your plan to pull that HD and attach it to your own known good machine in order to harvest the valued vehicle pictures, is definitely what I'd do. And…. I wouldn't put that machine on the internet. _________________ p.s. I ran a scan this morning with MSE on the new machine I mentioned in my prior post. MSE did not demand to update first. It simply completed the scan. All this time the machine was not connected to the internet. I then connected to the internet and selected to UPDATE MSE. It updated with no problem

No its Windows Xp Pro, SP2 not 2000

I re-downloaded the file again, it may be that the file is way to old and thats why it wants to updated, as a test I tryed it on this machine and the same thing happen. My buddy has a pc in town that has a BB for us to log into prolly has an old file and mabey its not updated, consider it did the same to this machine.

Went out and bought him a WD My Passport to copy all this turbo tax, pictures, and his music stuff, told his wife the machine is really an old machine consider it only has 2 usb ports in the back and has a modem thats still hooked up. He was using it in his hobby body shop where his truck and motorbikes are.

She told me they are going to go get a new pc and put it in the house and get high speed internet.
I love happy endings. :P

old pc with Windows Pro Service pack 2

Sorry I misinterpreted the information.
Should work with update to SP3, plus maybe a fresh installation media file of MSE.
