System: Windows Vista Home Premium on a Gateway Laptop.
Problem: The computer is logged on to a home network, but is only getting "Local Access" - no internet.
Steps taken:
* Other computers on the network are able to access the internet
* When I boot an Ubuntu Live CD on the Gateway, the wireless card syncs right up to the router and I'm on the internet, so hardware problems seem to be ruled out
* I've used Vista's automatic utilities to "repair" the problem, but each of the steps fails to correct it.
Any clues?
Thanks,
David
Hi, Sorry to hear of the problem connecting to the Internet.
The fact that your machine connects OK with Ubuntu,as you correctly say, more or less rules out hardware issues:
I suggest you try the following:
1 Make sure that your wireless adapter is working OK and has the correct Windows drivers installed (check via Device manager)
2 Might as well do the same to check your wired network adapter whilst you are in there!
3 Can you ping your router wirelessly …or using wired?
4 Can you ping local sites yahoo.com or yahoo.co.uk, or bbc.co.uk ?what is the result?
5 Is the result any different if you ping by IP address ?
6 Make sure that the network connectiion you want to use is"enabled"
7 If still no joy, from a command prompt with elevated priviliges type:
ipconfig /all
press Enter
and copy and paste the output into your reply
NB to close the command line interface type:
exit and press Enter
