Error 0x80070571 the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable I keep getting this message everytime I try to download, save and delete files, It seemed to of been fixed when i repaired windows but then soon started with that error message again. I also tried to do a system restore but all my restore points have gone. What to do? Im using a Dell XPS 420 desktop on Windows Vista.
Hi sorry to hear of the problem with your machine. This is often the precurser of catastrophic hard drive failure……. to be on the safe side immediately back up copy archive to removable media (an ext USB hard drive is ideal) everything that is important to you on your machine, not just your data files but your passwords user names, downloaded executable files, serial keys emails address books, favourites and drivers etc. At the same time gather together your windows installation and application installation discs and serial numbers (including the ones for windows itself. Try to do this in one session, your machine may not boot up again so don't shut it down until everything is safely copied off. When you are happy that everything important to you has been saved and checked for accuracy and reproducibility you can try running chkdsk /r and downloading the disc checking utility from the disc manufacturer's website and running that. However be prepared that you may need a new hard drive, fortunately these are not expensive and are easy to fit ….however the job of reinstalling Windows all your applications the updates and then copying across your backed up files can be very time consuming. If you have a disc image kept safe on removable media then you can fit a new hard drive and reimage back to your ideal set up in less time than it takes to walk the dog…however you may have some updates to do! I agree with PAWS this is probably an HD on the way out. However, if U wnted to go the extra mile, U could look in the Device Manager and see what make of HD U have and then go to the HD's website and download the appropriate diagnosic tools. Some give Windows environment functionality , but I perfer the create a bootup disc version. First —->immediately, U will definately want to do a complete back up of all Ur data, email files (if U are using a local email client), favourites, game save files / profiles etc. And save it in 2 separate physical places if possible. Then use the bootdisk. Note: U may need to set Ur BIOS to boot to the proper disk drive first. Then run the HD thru the disk testing tools, extented or full tests are best. If the drive passes these tests then do a full zeroing out of the drive as it is possible to have a bootsector virus that specializes in data corruption. If this seems like more work then it is worth then buy a new HD, they come zeroed out and / or in RAW form. Just be sure to look instide the case first to see what HD controller types U have. If the old Hard drive is40pin Pata (IDE) but the board has the newer SATA HD controllers then I recommend upgrading. Anyway, have fun. Darden
