I had a 256MB stick inserted. The shop took that out and put in a 1GB stick. Since there are two slots, is there anything wrong with me putting the 256MB back into the 2nd slot? Will it help speed up things?

256 will not give you any noticeable improvement. Did you try the Crucial Online Scanner to see what your maximum memory total can be and what configuration it is?
I did try the Crucial Online Scanner. It showed my 2 ram sticks and the total can be 2GB. If I buy anothe 1 GB stick and replace the 256MB one, will that do any good?
Yep doubling the memory will help with speeding programs up opening and closing.
