The computer is slow to start and I have problems shutting down, having to click shut down several times before anything happens.
A box appears everytime Windows XP starts up stating " Windows cannot find "logon.exe". Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.
I have read some of the posts and it appears to be a leftover from a virus that Norton cleared up. This has been happening for about a month now.

These are the system properties
Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, version 2002, Service pack 3
HP Pavillion Intel ®
Pentium ® D CPU 2.80GHz
2.80GHz, 1.00GB of RAM

I have downloaded Hijack This and have a log as follows.

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4

[*]Double click GMER.exe.

[external image: Posted Image]
[*]If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan…click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..

[*]In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED …
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
  • Show All (don't miss this one)

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
    • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
    • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"

hi Essex so far I have downloaded the GMER rootkit scanner and run the scan as described. No problem, it took over eight hours, but when I go to save, the computer freezes on me and i have to turn it off manualy, as i have no other knowledge of what to do. This has happened twice now. i have now deleted GMER and am going to download it again and try one more time. I will post the scan if i can save it. thank for your help jules
I have downloaded GMER scanner. It opens OK. however as soon as i press scan, the computer freezes. i .e the clock stops at the time i started the scan. The scan runs, the last one took 16hrs, and then i cannot do anything with it, i cannot save it, or copy or anything as the computer has been frozen. I have now done three scans all with the same result. I have also celeted the 1tsr GMER download, and downloaded another one, but it doea the same. i cannot seems to use GMER on this computer any ideas? I also dont know what else to do after the computer freezes. I have tried waiting for three hours, but nothing happens, so i turn it off at the mains to reboot.

yeah, my shoulder aches and it hurts when i laugh. :) No more problems on the computer though. One more thing ,Can I run the Malware programme and carry out a scan myself, and then click "remove selected"? And I have been using Norton Internet Security and paying around £30 a year subscription since 2002. lots of people tell me Norton is no good but apart from the last hiccup I have never had a noticable problem with anything. any advice regarding security would be appreciated
For sure I would recommend that you keep MBAM and use it weekly. Antivirus programmes are as far as I am concerned a personal choice, it is the one you are happy with :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day —– Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
    [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top

[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

[external image: Posted Image] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 21.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

SPRING CLEAN

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
[external image: Posted Image] Malwarebytes. Run weekly to keep your system clean
It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit
  • Microsoft Windows Update

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe :wavey:

P.S. Can't do anything about the shoulder I'm afraid :P
Ok, I have done all that you recommended and everything works fine. Thanks once again for your help, it has been fascinating, and it would be interesting to delve a little deeper into the workings of computers, but for now I think I will stay this side of the window, as it all looks to complex for me on the other side. oopps! mind your head on that aircraft hanger door now! regards ramsayross
