I have Windows XP on my old Dell computer. I got a new computer last month but want to keep this one too, but it is incredibly slow even though I removed all the pictures and extraneous programs I won't be needing.
Here is my Hijackthis Log, I appreciate a review to see if it's infected. Thanks! Pat

Please DO NOT run any scans other than those requested

I am looking at your log now and will reply with instructions shortly

Satchfan
Hello again pigriff

There is nothing standing out in your log but we need to take a deeper look to be sure.

The ASK toolbar comes bundled with many third-party applications, is considered as Spyware and comes with vulnerabilities.

See the following links and decide yourself whether or not you want to keep it.:

http://secunia.com/advisories/product/15810/
http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/ask-toolbars/

If you decide to keep it, ignore the “Ask” entries in this and the following instructions.

Run HijackThis

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan only.

Place a check mark next to:

O3 - Toolbar: ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker Toolbar - {3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll
O4 - Global Startup: Exif Launcher.lnk = ?
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O23 - Service: ASKService - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\AskService.exe

Close all windows except for HijackThis and click Fix checked.

=================================================

Remove the Ask toolbar.

From Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs highlight Ask Toolbar and choose Remove.

Delete the Ask toolbar from Programs:

C:\Program Files\AskBarDis

To do this, open Windows Explorer, (windows key+E). In the left pane, click on C: then scroll down and click on Program Files, then in the right pane, locate AskBarDis. Right click on it, choose Delete and, at the prompt, choose Yes.

=================================================

Run OTL

download OTL and save it to your desktop.
  • double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted
  • when the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output
  • check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check
  • click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won’t take long
  • when the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note: These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

===================================================

Run aswMBR

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.
  • double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
  • click the "Scan" button to start scan
  • on completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
Logs to include with next post:

OTL.txt
Extras.txt
aswMBR log

Thanks

Satchfan
Posting OTL.txt and Extras.txt
I cannot post the "aswMBR log" because my computer crashed when running the scan. I tried 3 times and it crashed every time before it finished, so I gave up.

Hi Pat

Your event log is showing a few disk errors. So we’ll run a check:

  • click on Start in the lower left of your screen and select Run
  • type cmd in the box and click OK
  • type chkdsk c: /r, (don't forget the spaces: there are two, chkdsk^c/:^/r) and hit Enter
  • type Y to agree to run at restart
  • type Exit and hit enter.
Now reboot your computer and let Chkdsk run.

===============================================

Run OTL
  • Double click on the icon to run it.
  • Copy/paste ALL the following text written inside the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

Hi Pat

Uninstall and update Java

The version you have is old and therefore vulnerable to infections.

Remove all versions of Java or JRE environment
  • click on Start, Settings, Control Panel.
  • double-click Add Remove Programs.
  • look for all versions of Java or Java Rintime Environment, and click Uninstall. Alternatively, right-click the program and select Uninstall.
Install Version 6 Update 27, from here

==================================================

Run OTL
  • open OTL again, click on Extra Registry -> Use Safelist
  • then click Run Scan
Post back with the 2 logfiles

===================================================

Download Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

Click here
  • double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • at the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish..
  • if an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • when the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • when removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • the log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

That looks OK

I think a final scan will make sure that your computer is clean.

Run ESET Online Scan

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

ESET OnlineScan 1. Click the Eset online Scanner button.
2. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

• Click on esetinstaller.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
• Double click on the Eset installer icon on your desktop.

3. Check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use
4. Click the Start button.
5. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
6. Check Scan archives
7. Push the Start button.
8. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
9. When the scan completes, push List of found threats
10. Push Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
11. Push the back button.
12. Push Finish
If a log has been produced post it in your next reply.

That looks fine.

Just one more scan before we tidy up

Run Security Check

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Posting the log. I have a problem with my antivirus software. I could not find Avast in my programs when you told me to turn it off to run one of the programs. So, later on I loaded AVG antivirus to replace Avast. Then today when I booted up, Avast was running, and evidently so is AVG, because it took 20 minutes for my pc to boot up. I don't know how to delete Avast since I can't find it in my programs. I know I can't have both of them running.

I tried to run the Avast uninstall and I get an error message "aswclear.exe is not a valid Win32 application." Any ideas how to get it to run? Thanks, Pat
