Hello,
I recently have been experiencing the following: when I start my computer and it gets to my desktop, an internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down error message immediately pops up (without launching IE). Also, form time to time I get a Dr. Watson postmortem debugger error as well. THere is also some program called Personal Security Zone (or something similar) that starts up and I cannot locate an uninstall file for. Here is my logfile:

Hi, welcome to Tom Coyote!

Looks like you have no Antivirus running...

I noticed that you are not running any AntiVirus application. You could get infected immediately after we clean you up. Please download and install ONE of these:

» Avast!
» AVG AntiVirus
» AntiVir
___________

*Since HijackThis creates backups of all it fixes and we want them safe and secured should they be required later, we need to move HijackThis to a permanent folder.

a.) While in your Desktop, right click in the background > Go to New > click Folder > Name the Folder HJT

b.) After creating the folder, find your HijackThis.exe (it looks like a detonator with some dynamites). Then, drag and drop that file to the new folder you created.

*Open HijackThis > choose Scan Only > Place a checkmark in the boxes beside these entries in bold.

Close your browsers and all open windows except for HijackThis, then click "Fix checked". Exit HijackThis.

*You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again. After your computer restarts, a notepad report will immediately open, please post all the contents of that report.

*Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
  • In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category, otherwise double click on Network Connections.
  • Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection for cable and dsl, and left click on Properties.
  • Click the Networking tab.
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems

Next go to Start > Run > type cmd and hit OK

type ipconfig /flushdns

then hit enter, type exit hit enter.
(that space between g and / is needed)

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the report.

Hi,

Please help me help you by following ALL of my instructions. You clearly didn't follow the first two. Before we continue, please do the following first.

Please download and install ONE of these:

» Avast!
» AVG AntiVirus
» AntiVir

Since HijackThis creates backups of all it fixes and we want them safe and secured should they be required later, we need to move HijackThis to a permanent folder.

a.) While in your Desktop, right click in the background > Go to New > click Folder > Name the Folder HJT

b.) After creating the folder, find your HijackThis.exe (it looks like a detonator with some dynamites). Then, drag and drop that file to the new folder you created.

After that, please post a fresh HijackThis log.

*You have remnants of Norton AntiVirus in your system..Please run the tool HERE to clean all the leftovers of your Norton Antivirus..

*Open HijackThis > choose Scan Only > Place a checkmark in the box beside this entry in bold.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3c3138e2-1dd2-11b2-806b-fc9c4232417f} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\GJ4ILGyW.dll

Close your browsers and all open windows except for HijackThis, then click "Fix checked". Exit HijackThis.

*Using Windows Explorer, find and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\GJ4ILGyW.dll

*please empty all the contents of this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Doctorweb\quarantine

Empty your recycle bin.

*Your Java is out of date....
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Click Start > Control Panel
  • Click Add/Remove Programs
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download Java Runtime Environment 6u1, and install it to your computer.

Reboot , post a fresh hijackthis log and tell me how is your machine running.

Other than that, Congratulations! Your log looks clean!

Configure Windows Xp to hide system files:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Check the Hide protected operating system files option.

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your pc's security.

Firewall Application - Although Windows Xp comes with a firewall, you should not rely on it because the Windows Firewall can only filter incoming data; outgoing traffic is not controlled, meaning that malware/viruses that are present in your computer can access the internet with no restrictions. There are several other Firewall that can protect you better by filtering incoming and outgoing data. Make sure you get only one of these.

» ZoneAlarm
» Kerio

Install SpyWare Blaster
~You can download it from here
~You can read the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

IESpyAds
~You can download it from here
~If you want to know how IEspyads work you can take a look at it here
~Please note that IESpyAds only works with Internet Explorer.

Note: Make sure you update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Happy safe surfing!
