You can manually turn auto run off, click on Start - My Computer then riught click on an optical or thumb drive and select Properties, then click the AutoPlay tab and select each file type in turn and check the marker, then from underneath select do Nothing, there may be a better way to do it but thats the simplest I know.
Now when it comes to protectijng a thumb drive it is advisable to get and run Flash Disinfector, do this on a clean machine, and plug the thumb drive in before you run it, the program then adds a hidden file to the thumb drive to stop it auto running on systems, hope this helps.
