[Resolved] Autorun Virus

Whether it be from school computers or the constant use of other peoples' USB or external drives, my computer is apparently infected with the autorun virus. I became aware of this problem a few months ago when Kaspersky scared the hell out of me with their snorting pig virus alert, saying that the USB drive I had plugged in was trying to run the Autorun virus. I promptly denied, scanned my computer and found a way to remove said virus from the drive. I then disabled autorun on my computer, hoping my problem would be alleviated.

All is well, and I have been using USB drives and such without issue (now running Avira) for the last couple of weeks, until a few days ago when a friend of mine on these forums gave me his external. When he received it back, he said he was alerted of the autorun virus! Apparently my computer is not clean. Malwarebytes, superantispyware, and avira show nothing. He claimed his drive was clean prior to me using it, so I guess I've been computing with a false sense of security…or cleanliness…

Anyway, here is my HijackThis log since all else has failed me; hopefully there is a solution!

Thanks!
Not from your hard drive.
That file will remove the autorun feature. If you plug in your infected flashdrive into a pc it will auturun and infect the pc. You need to run that first.

After doing that:

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.

Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste".
Wow! Sorry about the triple post. Thanks again for the reply. I must note that I got a ton of notices from AntiVir regarding the Flash_Disinfector but I'm assuming it happens because of the nature of the file… Here's the MalwareBytes log: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.28 Database version: 1267 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 2/7/2009 11:53:07 PM mbam-log-2009-02-07 (23-53-07).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 41745 Time elapsed: 2 minute(s), 35 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected) Nothing is caught by any scan that I run (full, quick, anything). As far as my computer goes…it's slower than when I reformatted not too long ago. It's not terrible for a partition with only 2% of free space available, but the boot time has slowed down a tad and it is far slower than my partition with Windows 7 :P I'm not experiencing any crashing, internet lag, strange processes, or any real consumption of computer power though. I just don't like the feeling that there is an autorun virus infecting everything I plug into my computer :(

It's not terrible for a partition with only 2% of free space available,

Yes, that's not much free space.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste".

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

One thing I found strange was that when I went to close Avira, it was not located in the icon tray. I figured it may have somehow been disabled, but when ComboFix started it informed me that Avira was running. Also, has system restore been enabled? I have disabled it because I use Sandboxie, and system restore tends to copy and save any viruses stuck in the sandbox and put them on the machine itself.

(By the way, 2% of free hard drive space is still 6gb, so it's not absolutely crammed for space)
I wouldn't suggest ever running your computer with System restore turned off.

Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.
Did you want me to run ComboFix again using the steps you provided a few posts above? A log was not automatically generated after dragging the file in.

That, along with 6.bat, 0w.exe, and autorun.inf

I don't know if that had any effect on my computer, but here is the hijackthis log. I scanned the drive with malwarebytes and Avira deleted all of the infected files, then formatted the drive..

If I plug in an infected drive, will I have to go through all of these steps again?
