I have a 3 year old Gateway desktop computer that until recently would start up with the fan running full for about 5 sec. and then cut its speed back to about 1/4 of the start up. Now for no apparent reason it runs full on all the time. This happened about a week ago. Re booting doesn't help. Any ideas of what could be going on or how I can get it to slow down. It sounds normal. It is simply much faster than normal. I can't use the restore function for some reason. Ralph
How long is it since you cleaned out the computer?( physically cleared out the dust, debris and detritus that collects especially around the fans…CPU etc An air duster is useful for this….. Before doing this you should take all personal safety and ESD (antistatic) precautions..post back if you need a step by step on his. Regards paws
That suggests you're temp's are high, this can be for a variety of reasons, but lets start with finding out what you're temp's are, upon booting enter the bios, do NOT change ANYTHING, and exit without saving, this way no changes will be made, now look through for a menu along the lines of System Health, then note what the CPU temp is, and report back. Now too double check this (some readings can be off due to bad sensors etc), get and run Speedfan, again note the CPU temp, wouldn't hurt to mention the others as well while you're doing that, then once we can see what they are we can get a better idea of where the issue may be. Also tell us how long since you cleaned the case out, how old the system is, the last time the heatsink last had fresh thermal compound applied, next tell us hoe many fans and where they are on the case, and how hot is it where you are, all these are things that can make a difference so you may be best with a combination of cleaning and re-seating the heatsink, but that depends on the answers to these questions. *edit Dam my slow typing lol

Thanks guys for the advice. I cleaned out the computer and it looked clean. Just goes to show looks aren't everything. after air dusting all the fans and hardware it works fine.
