HI There,
When I turned on my laptop this morning I discovered the following message:
svchost application error
the instruction at "0x00c896bc" referenced memory at "0x00000000". the memory could not be "written". Click ok to terminate the program. click cancel to debug the program.
I googled the message which seemed to suggest that the problem has something to do with windows automatic updates, but this has been turned off following a previous problem (the laptop was taken to a show and reloaded from scratch).
If anyone has any suggestions as to how to solve this problem I would greatly appreciate it!
If it's any help, the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite M30X -129 - Intel Pentium M processor 1.70ghz - winXP home edition service pack 3.
Many thanks for your time,
Rich
Did you reboot and see if it still happens? Often, a simple reboot resolves this problem.
BTW, it is okay to disable updates, but that then requires you to manually check and do them. Not updating is not a good safety practice. This is especially true of notebooks that travel, and connect to unfamiliar networks.
Hi Digerati,
I have rebooted since I posted - I manually updated Win and restarted, but the message still popped up - I have since restarted again and the message has not appeared … hopefully it has indeed gone! The only other problem I have is that a Norton security scan keeps appearing - at first it was just a .exe file on the desktop, but then it installed itself - i think it has somethingto do with a shockwave update, despite clicking no on the "install Norton" box - do you have any advice on how to stop this from occurring?
many thanks for your help,
Rich
