Hi
I have a Samsung R55 laptop with intel centrino duo 1 gig ram 90 gig hd nvidia graphics.

I run Win XP Pro and Ubuntu Linux Dual boot

I have just had a hit with nasty virus which the tech team here have been brilliant with
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Unknown_infe…=15#entry650171

I have been trying to remove some programs like Vuse, and am unable to.

In the GUI when I click remove nothing happens and when I try to use the command line I get:

wmic:root\cli>product get name
Node - FENIXINK
ERROR:
Code = 0x80041001
Description = Generic failure
Facility = WMI

wmic:root\cli>.

I have also noticed that my svideo is now only showing in black and white

My system is now virus clean but looks like some files are corrupt.

If can be helped I really dont want to rebuild my system. I do have recovery disks created but will loose to much, many of my program disks went astray when I emigrated to Spain.

Would like to just repair the corrupt files and remove the programs i want to.

TIA

Dario
If you find yourself still looking for a solution after following Jacee's recommendation above…

Your computer's XP Pro operating system may have some missing or corrupted files.
This can happen in ordinary "wear and tear", and it can happen when doing major repair work such as malware removal.

XP Pro has a self-checking utility known as System File Checker sfc /scannow
You will need either an XP Pro installation CD or the i386 folder from your present machine's system.

Have a look here, for an overview of running sfc /scannow

Sorry, this is terribly old, but maybe you can decipher something from it http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/aspne…neric-fail.aspx

Looking at your topic in the Malware forums … did you install Windows XP pro over the top of Win 98? … and you dual booting XP pro with Ubuntu? :wacko:

No I didnt install Windows XP Pro over Win 98, The system was specifically ordered with XP Pro, I use Ubuntu Linux most of the time but need XP Pro also.

Thanks for your response but afraid the link you gave me does not solve the problem. :wacko:

Already tried scannow and it did not pick up any problems.

It looks like some of the uninstall scripts for the programs concerned are corrupt. i will try to do a reinstall of one of the programs and see if it repairs the uninstall script, if that does not work I will have to do a manual undelete, its a pain trying to clean the registry though.

Will let you all know how I get on

Thanks
manual undelete <– Do you mean "uninstall manually" ?

I like your plan of action to "reinstall" first to facilitate a good "uninstall" via control panel Add/Remove or the application's native uninstall tool.

If that fails, you may wish to consider Revo Uninstaller
