Follow-up: In Sync
In last week's editorial, I talked about some of the programs and services that are currently available for keeping files on multiple computers synchronized. One that's been around for a long time and that I neglected to mention in the original article is SyncToy. This is one of the free PowerToys originally developed by Microsoft for Windows XP and a number of readers wrote to say that they use it.
The current version is 2.1, which was released in November 2009. It runs not only on XP but also on Vista and Windows 7 and there are both 32 bit and 64 bit versions available. You do need the .NET framework 2.0 installed and if you're upgrading from a previous version of SyncToy, you need to be sure all folder pairs are completely synchronized with the old version before you run Setup for the new one. That's important because you can end up losing data if you don't do it that way.
There are a number of new features in this latest version, including the ability to rename folder pairs, detection of drive letter reassignment, filtering, and the ability to sync files that are encrypted. Performance is better, too. And it can manage multiple sets of folders simultaneously and combine files from two folders.
