Hello,

I am trying to fix my mother's computer a Dell Optiplex GX280 running WindowsXp . I tried running a virus scan but was unable to scan a selection of system32 files. For the most part I get unnecessary pop ups with my internet browser firefox. Although I have Adblock plus installed which usually stops from any pop ups, which leads me to believe I may have some kind of a root kit or malware hidden on here. Here is some information that will probably help to identify my problem:

System Information

When I first tried to run the program a message display saying:

"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click start, Run and type:

notepad C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) Hijack This reports and delete them. Save the file as hosts. ' (with quotes), and reboot. "

The second message I received said:

"Your hosts file has invalid line breaks and Hijack This is unable to fix this. O1 items will not be dispalyed."

Any thoughts on where to go from here? Thanks!
Hi,

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
