Hey i have a problem with trying to get my External HD to work. It was fine before and never had this problem. All i did was Reformat the HD using my Satalite Dish network. Because in order to record certain TV events from the satellite onto the HD, it needs to be reformatted. So i did that. Now my pc is not recognizing it. When i go to "my computer" the hard drive is not displayed there. I tried to go to the "device Manager" and un install the driver for the HD, i also tried updating the driver and it says. "The hardware was not installed because the wizard could not find the necessary software" I also noticed a change in my device manager with my drivers. One of them under the category "Other Devices" has a yellow Exclamation mark. That was not there before so im assuming thats related to my problem. How ever i am not sure how to fix t his, this is the first time i reformatted this drive and now i can't get it to read any more. Is there any steps i need to take in order to diagnose this problem or fix it. Please let me know, thank you!
Jeff, I'm not sure if the yellow exclamation point is related. However, when you say you used your satalite dish network to reformat the hard drive because it requires it in order to record movies to it, it sounds as if you change the file system to something proprietary that is only going to work on your receiver. When you reformatted the drive you wiped everything on it AND there is only one reason your receiver would require this. Because it wants to use its own file system that your computer is not going to recognize. You can right-click My Computer, click Manage, then in computer management click on disk management. You should see the drive listed in there. It will be inaccessible until you repartition and reformat it on your PC. But, its only going to be one or the other. It doesn't sound as if you can use this drive interchangeably between both devices.

Is it possible, your (external) usb connection is dead? – without extra power, the usb-port get dammaged by overconsumption energie.
