Ive been having problems with my computer and i wiped the harddrive, did 3 wipes to make sure the HD was clean, then reinstalled windows SP3 it took me like 5 tries to install it because it kept restarting and giving me error screens, i did not use backup files it was a complete install. some of the problems i have include, mozilla will not stay running, norton restarts the comp, keep getting error reports saying computer has recoved from a serious crash/fatal error or something like that. some of the texts screens that i have seen when it crashes read,
SRTSP.SYS- Address B1FE7731 base at B1FE0000
NAVENG.SYS-Address B1D25B28 base at B1D22000
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT

Here is some more information to what was going on and what we had already done/initial problem

Hi Kaehler88. I read through the link you posted and agree with Tomk, this smells like bad memory (RAM).

How much memory do you have and how many DIMMs (sticks of ram) do you have. If you're not sure. SIW can tell you. Download and run it, no install needed.

Get the SIW Standalone (English-Only) and let me know what it says about memory. Scroll down to Hardware then click on Memory. Right click anywhere in the right pane and select Copy to clipboard, then paste into a post here. It will look something like this:

Basically, if you have more than one stick of ram, power off, remove one, then power on and run for awhile, see if the problem occurs. If not replace the ram. If yes, swap the ram sticks and try again.

You have 256MB and 512MB sticks installed. I'd start by removing the 256MB stick (with power off) then boot and see what happens. As I mentioned before, if it's OK then replace it (I'd add another 512MB instead of the 256, your computer can take up to 8GB). If it's not okay, put the 256 back and remove the 512, boot and see what happens. Also look around while you have the computer open, see if it's dirty. If so, buy a can of compressed air and blow it all out, especially fans and CPU heat sink. Make sure power is off while doing things inside the computer.
im looking at buying ram sticks right now. side note, i have been using this computer for the past 5 years and its run plenty fast and has ran great everytime ive done a reformat, why is it that now all of a sudden it can function any more?…ive tried can air for the past 2 weeks i keep cleaning it so i dont think dust is an issue.
not sure if these mean any thing but they came up after the computer crashed again. C:\DOCUME~1\MASONK~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER9284.dir00\Mini012010-04.dmp C:\DOCUME~1\MASONK~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER9284.dir00\sysdata.xml C:\DOCUME~1\MASONK~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER1d0f.dir00\Mini012010-03.dmp C:\DOCUME~1\MASONK~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER1d0f.dir00\sysdata.xml C:\DOCUME~1\MASONK~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERa974.dir00\ccSvcHst.exe.mdmp C:\DOCUME~1\MASONK~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERa974.dir00\appcompat.txt these 3 all came up the same time with a message that said windows recovered from a serious crash
it said everything was ok it its end, said its probably hardware, since ive pulled out the 256 stick the comp has not reset and seems to be running better, i think the ram stick was just bad. im gonna get another ram stick as soon as i can find one… i know my current stick is PC2100U is that the only model of ram i can get or are there different one that are compatible?
Hi until Rich gets back…go here: www.crucial.com allow the crucial scanner to analyse your computer…..(accept the ActiveX that is safe from this site) it will tell you (usually) everything you need to know about your memory….. and possibly a bit more! It will even give you prices, but there is no compulsion to buy from them…….having said that..I usually do, and have never been disappointed! Regards paws
ok i ran the scan and it did tell me what i needed, its only gonna cost me like $40 for a 1gb upgrade, and $76 for two 1Gb upgrades, thank you very much.
