Hi Guys! My cousin has given me her laptop to see if I can fix it for her, and I need the help of the experts over here at whatthetech. It is a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Windows Vista. When you first boot up everything looks and works normally. But after a while the computer just freezes. Not only does explorer stop responding, but whatever application I'm running freezes as well. Perhaps "freeze" isn't entirely accurate as I can still move around with the mouse/touchpad and see the arrow respond, but everything else is locked up and I can't click/select anything. It's hard to pinpoint exactly when/why the computer locks up. The first time I witnessed it for myself was when I installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and tried to do a full system scan. About 35 minutes into the scan, it locked up. I thought that maybe MAM was just taking a long time on whatever item it was scanning at the time, so I let it sit for about 15 minutes. Nothing. Even the "time elapsed" counter was stuck where it was. So then I tried to just exit the program and restart the computer. That's when I noticed that it wasn't just MAM; EVERYTHING had stopped responding, just as she had described. I had a similar experience when trying to run a scan with McAfee, which was already installed on her computer. Everything stopped responding 20-30 minutes into the scan.
Here's the kicker to this whole thing though. She admitted that she first started noticing the problem around the time she was using a Limewire-type program called Frostwire (why don't they listen to me when I tell them about installing P2P trash on their computer
). She had already uninstalled the program by the time I got my hands on the computer though. Can't remember whether she said the problems showed up when she installed Frostwire, or when she uninstalled it. Maybe the timing is just a coicidence, but this seems pretty suspect to me!
Below is the HiJackThis log. I appreciate any help you guys can give me!

UPDATE:
the freezing problem still persists. I figured updating to Vista Service Pack 2 would be a logical first step to take in trying to solve the problem. Unfortunately, it locked up just before finishing the update. So I had to do a manual panick shutdown (i.e. holding down the power button for several seconds). So, my next idea was to boot in safe mode and see if that would prevent the lockups long enough for me to run a full virus scan and/or update to SP2. This is when I discovered that THE COMPUTER FAILS TO BOOT IN SAFE MODE. It seems to freeze for a second on the black screen which lists all of the windows components that it is loading. And then a blue screen appears for just a split second, followed by a screen which says windows failed to boot and reccomends that I use the system recovery utility. So I tried to run this utility, but on the screen where it tells me to select my operating system which I want to fix, there's nothing listed! There is a note on this page which says to load the drivers from a CD, etc. if the operating system is not listed. But I don't have the disk so I'm pretty much stuck until I can get my hands on the Vista CD from my cousin. Any help?
P.S.
At this piont, I'm not really sure if this is a virus issue or more of a Windows issue. Perhaps one of the administrators can suggest/decide whether this thread should stay put or be moved to the Windows forum.
Here's the kicker to this whole thing though. She admitted that she first started noticing the problem around the time she was using a Limewire-type program called Frostwire (why don't they listen to me when I tell them about installing P2P trash on their computer

UPDATE:
the freezing problem still persists.
