I am running Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 2) on a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. I have Norton running. I voluntarily run Ad-Aware, Spybot & AVG Anti-Rootkit on a regular basis. None of these services have located a major issue. Within the last couple days, after I login to my laptop the screen will freeze. Here are the laptop specs:
Used space: 151,672,893,440 bytes 141 GB

Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.5GHz 2.5 GHz

If anyone can assist me, I would REALLY appreciate it!
Thanks a ton!
Hi Happy,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

A random thought…. I have a nephew who was having the same problem over the weekend (on a laptop with Vista). Turned out that his computer was just trying to update. Once he updated… everything straightened out. It's probably a long shot… but you might try going to Microsoft.com and checking to be sure all updates are current.

After that… hjt doesn't do a very good job with newer operating systems. I'd like to see a different log.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
Tomk, thank you so much for taking up my plight! It is very nice to meet you, your help is greatly appreciated. As to your random thought… I keep my Microsoft updates set to "automatic", so should I still go to Microsoft.com and check that out? I was able to run the DDS reports as you requested, however, I don't know how successful I was in disabling my security programs. I do run Norton Internet Security, and I did try to follow the instructions that were provided, however, my program didn't really look like what was described (changing user via User Accounts and whatnot), but I did take a run at it, and I hope I've accomplished what was requested. Heck, I couldn't even get my AVG free addition to open… So, I guess what I am saying is that I'm sorry in advance if I botched that part. *sigh* Ok, on to the logs… DDS.txt: DDS (Ver_10-12-12.01) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 20:10:19.11 on Tue 01/18/2011 Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18999 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_23 Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium 6.0.6002.2.1252.1.1033.18.3581.1536 [GMT -5:00] SP: Spybot - Search and Destroy *Enabled/Outdated* {ED588FAF-1B8F-43B4-ACA8-8E3C85DADBE9} AV: Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live! Happy,

I'm not seeing any malware, but I'm thinking my random thought may not be such a long shot. As you can see in your error log…. your windows update has failed several times.

1/17/2011 11:27:03 PM, Error: Microsoft-Windows-WindowsUpdateClient [20] - Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 System (KB2289158).

1/17/2011 10:17:00 PM, Error: Ntfs [131] - The file system structure on volume C: cannot be corrected. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:.

And those last line would make me believe that we should follow their directions.

Click on "Start" in the lower left of your screen
Click on "All Programs" and select "Accessories."
Right click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as Administrator".
A DOS style window will open.
At the command prompt type chkdsk C: /f and press enter.
If it ask you do you want to run chkdsk at next boot…. select yes.
Then reboot your system and let it run.

Let me know how it goes.
Hmm… interesting… I went out to Microsoft.com as instructed. There were 8 important updates, and 2 optional updates to install. I tried to complete the installations and it failed. 3 times. Hmmm…
I attempted the DOS prompt instructions. I agreed to checking it at reboot. I restarted the laptop. I saw nothing happening DOS related (visually). So, I attempted again to run your instructions. Attached is what I received:

Press Y to choose to run Chkdsk on next restart.

I don't think you will have to hit enter. You will probably get a screen that says something like "Chkdsk schedule to run on next restart". Then you want to shut down your system… then restart. Chkdsk should then run prior to your computer fully booting.
Ok. I am going to attempt that now. I went to Windows Updates and tried to update 8. They all failed. I will let you know what happens. Thank you SO much for your assistance! Post soon!
I attempted what you asked of me. I completed the chkdsk request. I shut down. I started. There was no visible DOS screen/prompt running. Sorry!!!!!!!
Ah…. I confused you. Wouldn't be a Dos screen on reboot. I don't have a Vista so I don't know exactly what you should have seen… but you should have seen something that said chkdsk was running…. probably a counter. Doesn't really matter as it should have done what it would do. Please try updates again.
On second thought…. let's run another couple of tools before you get me a DDS log.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
