Everytime I run my Norton Antivirus on my computer, it keeps showing a virus found. It says it's a backdoor.trojan, and is under the c:\windows\dctp.pfh. I remove this virus every time, but it will keep appearing whenever I run a new virus scan. I can run the scan the next day and this virus will still be there. I have the most updated virus definitions, but after I couldn't get this virus removed, I quit using that computer. I believe I also tried deleting this file, but that didn't help either. I'm now trying to fix this issue as I need to use that computer again. I downloaded the ATF cleaner and ran that program as noted. I then ran the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware software as well. After both of this, I ran HijackThis. See below for both the Malwarebytes' log along with the HighjackThis log. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi, welcome to the WTT Forums. My username is Raktor, and I would be glad to take a look at your log.
Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I will be back to you shortly with instructions. :)

Hi, welcome to the WTT Forums. My username is Raktor, and I would be glad to help you with your malware issues. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Please do not run any scans or fixes without my direction.
  • Finally, stay with this topic until I give you the final 'All clear' post.

I hate to the bearer of bad news but, your log shows a very dangerous Trojan is residing on your PC.

Backdoor.Trojan
The Trojan attempts to steal passwords, as well as logging key presses and open window titles to text files and periodically sends the collected information to a remote user via HTTP. The Trojan downloads and executes additional files from a remote site. Configuration files may also be downloaded which define further behaviors.

As you can see, it not only includes a key logger, but back door functionality.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's back door functionality, Your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. If it were on my PC I would not hesitate for a moment to do so. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will of course do our best to clean the computer of any infections that we can see but, as I already stated, we can in no way guarantee it to be trustworthy.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do. If you would like to continue, please follow my remaining instructions.

1) DDS
[external image: Posted Image]
Please download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

2) GMER
Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and put it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

3) What You Will Need To Post:
  • DDS logs
  • GMER log
I have the other computer disconnected from the internet, which i think i did relatively soon after i discovered the virus i had. I think i will take your advice to re-install the OS system on this computer. Do you have any advice on how to go about that? Also, I started the computer with the virus in safe mode, and copied all "my documents" and other files i wanted to keep. Is there anyway the virus could attach on to these files and now be on my external hard drive? Would you recommend not copying those files to the computer once it is cleaned? Thanks for all your help. It's greatly appreciated!
For advice on backing up, formatting, and reinstalling Windows XP, I recommend you visit the following links.
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/xpinstall?full=1
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

Regarding your backups, it doesn't appear that you had a worm that infects multiple files on your PC - but for safety I would recommend not copying over executables (.exe) and screensavers (.scr). The rest should be fine.
