I have been fighting bugs for almost two weeks (Norton Internet Security). It is always the same two targets: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and c:\windows\hosts. At first there were trojans–trojan.byteverify, trojan.ecure and bloodhound.exploit. Now it is a worm–backdoor.doster.
I have repeatedly run Norton, Hijackthis, Spybot S & D, Ad-aware–always up to date, in regular mode, in safe mode, anything I can think of. Internet Explorer homepage has also been hijacked by a dialer to a porn site. I have deleted references to the site address from Hijackthis, but they always are added back on startup. The computer starts slowly and sometimes it takes several attempts and restarts to get ConnectionManager and my browser (SBC/Yahoo DSL) operating because it locks up. I am using XP Home.
Norton VirusAlert says it has deleted the files, but the VirusAlert window pops up repeatedly–dozens of times. I have followed their online instructions for removal of backdoor.doster, including checking the registry entries, but I cannot find the entries they say to delete. I have found that I seem to be able to connect if I do two things: keep closing the VirusAlert windows as they appear during startup and don't click on anything until I see the little window that says that all connections are operating normally.
Norton Tech Support makes me wait for 30-45 minutes to tell me that for $70 they will tell me how to fix what their software and online instructions say they fix, but don't. I figure for that much I can dump Norton and give McAfee a shot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Am posting the latest Hijackthis log:

I have been through that procedure on Symantec's website several times–I even used Intelligent Updater to be sure definitions are up to the minute– and I always get the same result: the scan incicates no infections and when I go to the registry, the value they say to delete is not found under the specified key. I don't see the part where it says to reboot, turn on System Restore and reboot again. However, I followed the procedure again and rebooted; it took four attempts (restarts) to get my system running without freezing up so that I can run programs or access the internet. As usual, it is starting slowly and, on this fourth attempt, the Virus Alert window indicating backdoor.doster popped up 42 times during startup. I decided not to turn on System Restore and reboot because it is such a pain to get it going again. It seems that I have better luck starting up if I leave the computer turned off for an hour or more. If you think it is essential to turn SR back on, I will do it. Meanwhile, I have included another log. Thanks for your time and suggestions.

Yes .. It is essential to turn system restore back on. If gives you a "restore point" should something catastrophic happen to your system.

Also, please do these things:

Please download the LATEST version of Hijack This! (v 1.98.0).

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Fix these items:

Reboot.

Then try these 3 online virus removal tools:

Trend-Micro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Etrust:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot inbetween scans.

Post back with a new log file, and an update on how the machine is working. :)
You guys do great work. I ran Panda first and it found four infected files and cleaned or renamed them. After the reboot, no more Virus Alert warnings from Norton. The other two scans found no infections. Also, the machine seems to be starting up and shutting down normally. However, I see that the browser hijacker is back in the log–the six items labeled R0 or R1. I have not fixed them yet. I have also included the list from Panda for your information.

EXCELLENT WORK!!!!

The malware entries are all gone.

I do have a few "optional" fixes.

This program:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmdprovidersbc] "c:\program files\support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe" /server /startmonitor /deaf /nosystray

Is considered "spyware".

Read about it here:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…slibrary/tgcmd/

If you don't want that program running, just "fix" that entry with Hijack This! and reboot.

Another optional fix is this one:

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Read about that progrm here:

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_o.htm

If you don't want that program cluttering up your computer's memory, just "fix" that with Hijack This! and reboot.

Another optional fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BJCFD] C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe

Read about it here:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas…esslibrary/cfd/

And an interesting post here:

http://forums.thatcomputerguy.us/index.php?showtopic=1774

Some people consider Weatherbug "malware" because it can deliver pop-ups and advertisements to your machine. If you think it's benefits outweigh the irritation. then keep it.

Thats about all I can see.

Here's my "standard reply" of things to consider to help prevent future infections.

GOD bless!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Micah 6:8– Thank you so very much for your help; what a Godsend you have been. One last question, if you don't mind: I do not use IE as my default browser; however, I have a feeling that I should, nonetheless, load the IE protections which you suggested. No? May God richly bless you and all that your hand may touch. Romans 8: 30-39
I'd say if you use IE at all, it's worth being as "protected" as possible. You know what they say, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Take care!!! M68 :)
