Yes, thank you, Doug. All seems well.
I've updated the drivers suggested by the PCPitstop Full Test and there was a Vista Service Pack 2 update last night.
I'm now going to upgrade the Ram to 4Gb and give the laptop back to my nephew. Perhaps then I can get back to "normal" life.
I'm very grateful for all your help.
