After much helpful advice from Ken & Doug, my nephew's laptop is now disinfected and acessing the internet again. (See: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=50685
http://forums.whatthetech.com/LAN_connecte…s_t106157.html.

Now when I start up the laptop and get to the desktop window, there is frantic disk activity - it whines! The CPU shows 100%. This occurs for about 10 minutes before it settles down to about 4%. Task Manager says there are 73 processes working. Is that normal?

Edited to remove ) from link that was making it invalid.
73 is quite a few.
I'd have to go back to look at the logs to see what that might be a boot time.
I'll do that.

But in the meantime, will you please Run the PCPitstop Full Tests (overdrive) and post a link to your results.

Use IE (internet explorer)

Once you post the results, we can have a look at what may be going on with the machine.

Hi RosieB,

Toshiba Satellite Pro P200 14W <– Toshiba does not seem to have a match for "P200"

I'm thinking that you need the keyboard drivers for that machine.
Can you navigate to Toshiba and see if you can find that particular Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop.
Go to Downloads to find the chipset and driver downloads.

I'll keep trying myself, but maybe with both of us looking, we'll find it faster.

Post back with the URL (website address) when/if you find it.

Oh, other thought….. Do you have the Toshiba Driver and software CD that came with the machine?
Consider downloading and installing from the link you provided: 5/05/09 – Touch Pad Driver – Synaptics Windows Vista 32 Bit 9.1.14.0 World Wide ______________________ Is there a possibility of dirt/dust being the culprit. Turn the machine upside down and lightly bump it, being "very" careful not to put stress on the Monitor Screen and/or hinges. Do you have "canned air"? (use it to blow any debris out from under the keys. Careful not to force the air too close to the keys, as they have been known to fly off from compressed air pressure during cleaning. We'll get the to PCPitstop Results. So far it looks like a fine machine, except for the remaining problems.
Hi Doug I downloaded the driver - no joy. I prised off the space bar and cleaned underneath it - still not working. BUT, a family member informs me that some wine may have splashed onto the laptop on Sunday!!! Could this be the reason for my latest problems, I wonder. The latest thing is that it hangs on the initial Press F2 for SETUP or F12 for boot devices screen. I have to actually select the hard drive to start the boot up sequence. The clicking noises are still there and I've noticed that the My Computer Icon seems highlighted until all the noise and disk activity ceases. Otherwise, once it settles down it appears fine. Rosie
Wine?
I suppose it can be sticky when partially dry and is usually applied to the operator in the chair, rather the keyboard in front of the operator.
Let's hope is dries some more and proves to be a bit forgiving.
Lifting that keyboard out to apply a thorough cleaning is something I would not wish to do.

Let's have a better look at what is running from startup:

Please consider running this simple utility that will help you get control of programs and processes that you wish to have running active, or not.

CodeStuff-Starters
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/Starter.html

Download and install, agreeing to the licensing terms and allow to install with all of the default settings as preselected in the installation wizard.

When you finally allow CodeStuff-Starters to run
It will preselect StartUps Tab -
  • Click on File
  • Select - save as .HTML (name the report file - Startups Aug18.html)

In your next reply, post the file as an attached file (use browse and upload buttons – at the bottom-right corner of your topic posting window where you are typing your next reply)

Please do not make any changes with Code-Stuff Starters, until after you post the requested information above and receive recommendations from a helper here.

Best Regards
Hi RosieB, Most of that stuff can be Disabled…. Except your AVG8 Acronis is an excellent image backup solution. Does he use it? Acronis can also be quite a resource consumer. And it is a little complicated to turn off. But easy to turn back on if wanted. Start by experimenting with Disabling the more expendable stuff: Like: QuickTime SWG Palm Registration iTunesHelper Adobe Reader HotKeysCmds RtHDVCpl Turn off a few (disable using CodeStuff Starters) then use the machine for general computer activities to see how it goes. Then go back and turn off a few more. Any time you find that "something is missing" or you typically use something that you've disabled, you can use CodeStuff Starters to Enable it again.
Hello Doug I disabled some of the startup things and all seems fine, so far. Thank you. Now, how do I get it to boot automatically from the hard drive without having to press F12 and select it? I think I may have to disassemble the laptop to get at the keyboard so that I can clean it properly. I'm fed up using the on-screen keyboard for the Spacebar - it's very limiting. Now, I just have to find an on-line service manual for the laptop so that I don't wreck it in the process! I'm very grateful for all your advice, Rosie
First check to make sure you have no CD/DVD disks in your optical drive. Having a bootable disk (like an MS installation DVD) may cause the F12 function to appear. If you did have a cd/dvd inserted, and taking it out solved the situation, then you're fixed. _________ If the above doesn't apply, then you need to enter SETUP/BIOS to set Boot Order. To get into BIOS on most Toshiba laptops Restart the laptop and Press F2 early in the Boot sequence, before Windows starts loading. This will give you the option to Enter - SetUp or Enter - BIOS Click "yes" or "agree" or "OK" to continue on into BIOS BIOS is Basic Input Output System and has the machine's map for what hardware devices are present and how they are identified. You can use your Arrow Keys to navigate in BIOS. Go to item called "Boot Order" This will be a list of devices, including Hard Disk, Optical Disk(cd/dvd) and Floppy(if present) and maybe a couple more options that we probably don't need to worry about. Use your Arrow Keys to navigate to Hard Drive Then use Enter key to cause Hard Drive to move to the top of the list. Note: (there may be other keys and keyboard combinations to use when navigating in BIOS) (There will be a "legend" at the bottom or top of the page, indicating what keys to use and what the function accomplishes.) Once Hard Drive is at the top of the list, press ESC to exit and select the option of "SAVE Changes and EXIT" Your machine should then proceed with a normal boot to Windows (and the F12 options should not appear) Please remember that BIOS is where important information about your machine is kept in memory. Don't make any changes in BIOS unless you receive authoritative instruction to do so, or if you already know what you are doing. let us know how you progress with this.
