Hi mama,

Well, I agree with your assessment- she got NAILED! Right off the bat I can see Incredifind, Blazefind, Red Sheriff and NEWdotNET. If you still have my initial posts from your machines, get them and have her download, update, configure and run Spybot and Ad-Aware. Before you run them though, have her use "Add/Remove Programs" to get rid of any garp that shows up there, then reboot. After that, get a new log and post it here; I'll check it and give you further advice when I return from a doctor's appointment this afternoon.

Also, get her to install SpywareBlaster; it will help prevent any further mischief. Tell her not to lose hope- we've cleaned out worse on your machines.

That advice to NOT do anything about those O10 entries was VERY GOOD; thanks for that! If she had done anything there with HJT, it could have destroyed her Internet connection. We'll get to that problem later; I expect it to be resolved by another fix, but that will come after we get the new log. For now, I'm just standing by…

EDITED FOR SPELLING
Ok dokie - I had her run spybotSD reboot run again until clean. Ran ad-aware (in the proper configurations) until clean (reboot after each cleaning and run again) Had her look through all programs etc. to remove and ran panda and trend - they cleaned several trojans including briss out.

I had her install the free panda virus as her norton is outdated and she did not upgrade.

Here is her current log!!!!!!!

YIKES!!!!!!! (did I tell you that this site and you are just AWESOME lately?)

Hi mama,

BLUSH!!

I'll answer that by saying she's lucky to have a friend who knows what to do- every one of the things you told her to do are RIGHT ON, and she's much more secure now than when that log was posted earlier today. The rest of this post will be addressed to your friend.

Since you have installed another Anti-Virus program, you should UNINSTALL the Norton AV. AV programs are Prima Donnas, and they DO NOT coexist peacefully; you should only run ONE AT A TIME, and an expired AV program is worse than none at all because it can give you a false sense of security! Do keep any Firewall you have, unless you download a new one- a firewall is an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY for the Internet, and the one XP has included in it is USELESS because it only blocks INCOMING traffic and doesn't stop crapware from doing the "E.T.Phone Home" bit.

OK, here's the latest; the first thing we need to do is MOVE "HijackThis.exe" to a PERMANENT folder (such as C:\HJT). When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups in the folder it's in. Since Temporary folders get cleaned out now and then (the files get DELETED), you WOULD NOT want your backups there (any Sub-Folder of a Temporary folder is a TEMPORARY FOLDER). Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process! Fix problems are rare, but you WOULD NOT want to be the one it happened to.

On the same subject, it's VITAL that you UNZIP HijackThis. When it runs from inside a Zipfile, it CANNOT make the backups that are necessary to keep your system safe; they're what you'd need to Restore the computer in case of a FIX problem. Put it into that PERMANENT folder, and then simply unzip it there. The icon should be the "plunger-and-dynamite sticks", NOT a C-Clamp Zipfile icon.

Since you have already run Ad-Aware and Spybot, we'll go on to HijackThis. CLOSE YOUR BROWSER AND ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE IT'S RUNNING IN, and put a check in the box at the left end of ONLY the lines below. Then click on FIX CHECKED and let it run.

Hi mama,

GOOD WORK! That's clean.

Now to keep it that way. First, KEEP YOUR WINDOWS AND BROWSER UPDATED. As new security problems are found, Microsoft issues UPDATES to plug the holes that have been found. The top entry on your START menu should be "Windows Update," so this one is as easy as falling off a log. It should go withjout saying, you should also keep your Anti-Virus and Firewall software updated, too. If they can't recognize it, they can't stop it.

Since it's almost certain that your Restore Points that Windows uses for backup are contaminated, you will need to clear out all the old ones and create a new CLEAN Restore Point. If you don't know how to do that, here's directions: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam
Here's the sequence of events: DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE, REBOOT to clear out all the old points, RE-ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE and REBOOT to force Windows to create a new, CLEAN System Restore Point.

You need to clean out your Temporary folders; they can hold infected files (and probably do). Since you're running XP, there's a utility called Disk Cleanup that you access from Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools. Use it to clean ALL HARD DRIVES. Then in Control Panel>Internet Options, in the Temporary Internet Files section, click on the "Delete Files" button, put a check in the box to "Delete all offline Content" and click OK to comfirm. Next, delete Cookies (OK to confirm) and in the lower panel, "Clear History." Click OK to confirm, and it's done. Now DEFRAG (which will take quite a while if you haven't done it lately), and it's ALL behind you!

Next, I recommend installing SpywareBlaster. It "inoculates" your computer against literally THOUSANDS of known malware items, and it works in such a way that it DOES NOT need to be running (and consuming system resources) to protect you. The program sets a "Kill-Bit" for each malware item it blocks, and then that thing can't download to your computer or run if it's there. I don't know just how it works, but I can assure you IT DOES! Once the protection is set, all you have to do is check for updates about once a week, install them and run SB to set protection against the new items on the list. Once a Kill-Bit is set, you have PERMANENT protecton from that item unless you remove it. Best of all, this is FREEWARE. Follow this link to download it: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

For a good overview of basic Internet security, here is a good article: http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957 If I can leave you with one final thought, it's this: Security is NOT a destination, it's an endless journey.
YAY - k3dc - you are wonderful. My friend thanks you completely and will stay on top of it all now. She now knows where to come with questions and what not - and so this day ends with another victory for the good guys!!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!
