Hi, I'm new here, I tried to run through the self help first to avoid asking for help. Guess I need the help :(

First my main problem, every time I browse now my browse freezes, but it's a weird freeze. I can't scroll up or down or click on anything, but if I mouse over it, I can see what its supposed to go to. Thats with Google chrome. Also when it doesn't freeze, and I type in your lovely forum it will automatically change to yahoo or porn.

I ran the AFT Cleaner, it cleaned up the files. I installed mbam but it won't run. The Hijackthis wasn't running at a point either, but it worked this morning so I made a log quickly.

I'm running Windows XP SP3, amd dual core 4200, 4gb of ram. I have ESET antivirus installed. My browser is Chrome, I also use IE8
Which does have a lot of viruses quarantined:
PDF/Exploit.Gen Trojan
Win32/Olmarik.IF virus
VBS/TrojanDownloader.Agent.Gen Trojan
a variant of Win32/Kryptik.XS Trojan

For some reason I can't upload the log file, so I pasted it in. Sorry if I wasn't supposed to do that:

Thank you in advance for your time.
Hi DarkJuice and welcome to the forums here at WTT!

:welcome:

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    [external image: Posted Image]

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    ———————————————————–

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      ———————————————————–

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
No need to attach the logs, unless they are really long. Just copy and paste into the comment window.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
    files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
    * Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    * Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    * Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in
your reply.
Thanks for all the help so far.
I think we're pretty much all set here. The items Kaspersky found were in combofix quarantine and we'll clear those out in a minute.
Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following: ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall.Online-Armor
Outpost Firewall
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some other available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
Install Winpatrol -
Use Winpatrol to take control of your PC and provide another layer of security.
Help file and tutorial can be found Here
Block unwanted parasites with a custom hosts file -
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Keep your applications up to date -
Use Secunia Personal Software Inspector to help stay on top of application updates that could leave your PC vulnerable to attack.
I'll leave the thread open a few days in case you have questions or issues.
Dave
Wow thank you for everything, thought I had to format again lol. I'll install spywareblaster and the firewall now. Question though, NOD32 has a antivirus and antispyware, would it conflict with spywareblaster?
Question though, NOD32 has a antivirus and antispyware, would it conflict with spywareblaster?
Nope, it will create no conflicts and does not actually even run as a process. Take a look through the faqs at the following link and that will give you some details as to how it works.
Hope that helps and glad things worked out so well.
Hi Dave, I have a next question, which browser is the most secure in your opinion? IE, Mozilla or Chrome. Which is the best to use basically? Which do you use? From my knowledge, Chrome is the fastest and I thought it was the most secure one but i'm not sure.
I have not really used Chrome much but it hear it's good. Personally I've been using Firefox for years now and while because of it's popularity it's become more of a target for Malware, it's still more secure than IE in my opinion (although IE8 is better).
