Hello. I have attached my Mbam and HijackThis logs, but I thought I'd give you some background first. The problem started a day or two ago; I noticed that when doing Google searches (I use Firefox, if that's important) when I clicked on a link I would be redirected to an advertising website. I restarted my computer, and got a blue screen. This immediately set off alarm bells, so I did a scan with AVG Anti-Virus. It found a dozen problems, half of which it removed, half of which (svchost.exe) it was unable to remove. I redid the scan several times, always getting the same result. I then tried to open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but it refused to open. I've experienced this before, so I renamed Mbam and sure enough it then worked. I did a full scan, and it caught one thing - C:/Windows/system32/uacinit.dll - saying that it had to restart to delete it. Alas, I restarted, the problem persisted, I did another scan, and sure enough uacinit.dll is still there. I've repeated the process several times now and uacinit.dll is never deleted after restarts, and my computer has blue screens or frozen at start-up several times. I'm now doing a full scan with Counterspy. It has already found one thing (Trojan-Win32/Alureon.BF) and while I'll give it removing it a try, I'm not hopeful this will fix the problem. I had a problem similar to this several months ago, and called my computer guy to help me out. He was able to fix the problem by accessing my computer remotely, but it took two days. I couldn't follow everything he did, but I think that in the end he used ComboFix. As your website points out, however, I don't want to destroy my computer by trying to use ComboFix uninstructed, and I'm not even sure it this is the same problem. Is C:/Windows/system32/uacinit.dll the main problem? Or is it the svchost.exe that AVG catches? Or will this Counterspy scan fix my problems? Too much information! I sincerely hope you guys can help me out, and it would be much appreciated. Mbam and Hijackthis logs attached.

Hi,

Please do not attach your logs unless specifically requested to do so.

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

VERY IMPORTANT !!!
Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
Hello and thank you for your response. I can't seem to get ComboFix to run; I disabled active protection on Counterspy and turned off the the Resident Shield in AVG 8, yet when I run ComboFix all I get is the command prompt window ComboFix is supposed to run in. I left it there for over half an hour but nothing happened. Any thoughts?
malware is likely preventing it from running.

delete the copy of comboFix that you have then do the following:

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note:  In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    [external image: Posted Image]

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    ———————————————————–

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      ———————————————————–

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
Still no luck with ComboFix. I followed all the instructions, but the command prompt window still sits there without doing anything when I try and run the program.

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [zizovutuba] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vetaweyo.dll",s (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.
Still nothing on ComboFix. I'm assuming that if I give ComboFix about a minute to sit there and nothing is happening, it's not working. Should I be waiting longer?
No it usually starts up right away…

try it in safe mode

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY repeatedly,
  • this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
  • go into your usual account
I went into Safe Mode and launched ComboFix. I got the usual command prompt window doing nothing, but I also got an error window telling me that ComboFix only runs on Windows 2000 and XP. This is extremely strange given that I use Windows XP Professional. Any thoughts?
Ok.

Lets try something else then

To ensure that I get all the information this log will need to be attached (instructions at the end) if it is to large to attach then upload to Mediafire and post the sharing link.

Download OTScanit2 to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.

  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup either telling you that it is finished, or that a reboot is needed to complete the fix. If the fix is complete, click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that log back here in your next reply.

If a reboot is required, click the "Yes" button to reboot the machine. After the reboot, OTScanIt2 will finish moving any files that could not be moved during the fix and NotePad will open with the final results at that time. Post that log back here in your next reply.

Please download RootRepeal to your desktop
  • Physically disconnect your machine from the internet as your system will be unprotected.
  • Unzip it to it's own folder, close all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) and run RootRepeal.exe
  • Click the Report tab at the bottom and then the Scan button.
  • A box will pop up, check the boxes beside Drivers, Files, Processes SSDT and click OK.
  • Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg : C:\, then click OK.
  • The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
  • Once it is done, click the Save Report button, call it RepealScan and save the log to your desktop.
  • Reconnect to the internet.
  • Post the log here in your reply.
Here is the OTScan log from the running the fix. 📎OTscanfixlog.txt Combofix uninstall was successful. Here is the RepealScan. 📎RepealScan.txt During the RepealScan, when it was doing the Files scan it hit an error (I imagine you'll see this in the report). It scanned the C: drive fine, but when it hit the E: drive (my external hard drive) the error popped up. Afterward, my external hard drive disappeared from "My Computer," and when I removed it and plugged it back in to the USB, a window popped up saying it was corrupt (System Volume was corrupt?) although now I can access the external hard drive through "My Computer" again. Is the problem in the external hard drive?
Hi,

Hard to say at this point. - Keep the external drive plugged in for the scan

I would like to see if we can get ComboFix to run now.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note:  In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
