hi hopefully someone can answer this question for me..how do i install programs that are accessible to all users on a computer or do i have to install for each user?
i'm setting up a computer for my sister, it will be running XP and there will be 3 users, 1 limited and 2 admins
i installed winrar for my sister and when i went to look for it in the list of the other 2 users is wasnt there. i then went to install under the other admins account and it said there already was a folder do i want to install anyway (or uninstall i think), in any event it appeared to not be available under the other user account..something similiar also happened with comodo..there are a number of programs i wish to be available for each account, how would i go about that? or as i stated would i have to install for each user..
thank you in advance
Hello….
Most programs, when you install them will give you an option if you want to install for all users of the system, or just for your account. You know the obvious answer to that one.
However, if for some reason you don't get that option and you install the software but you don't see it available in the other user accounts, you can try this:
From the account where the progam is available:
If the progam is listed in the start menu, open My Computer -> C:\Documents and settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\ and drag the link from the start menu into this folder. The program will now show up on the start menu of any user.
If the program is listed on the desktop, open My Computer -> C:\Documents and settings\All Users\Desktop and drag the link from the desktop into this folder. The program will not show up on everyone's desktop.
The location of the All User's profile is by default in C:\Documents and settings\All Users. Under some circumstances this folder may be located in a different location if you have relocated your user profiles, or have installed windows on a different drive than C:.
The way the all users profile works is that if you place something in the desktop folder it will show up on everyone's desktop, if you place something in the start menu folder it will show up on everyone's start menu, if you place something in the documents folder it will show up in "shared documents" on everyone's account.
Due to poor programming practices, some programs will absolutely not work in a limited user account without some serious tweaking.
Hope that helps.
thank you much!! i'm going to try that tomorrow..it's a little late for me now..i'll let you know how it goes..btw each program that i had tried didnt give me the option of installing for all users
