Like many others I'm sure, I have the same problem as "kanwalds" posted March 30, 2009(http://forums.whatthetech.com/Cutwail_gene_other_problems_please_helpand33_t101972.html) , and I also downloaded Live One Care but using it as trial, haven't purchased yet. I removed AVast Home Edition and installed it as recommended by another post. The solution and cleaning procedure is mind-boggling. Can I ask if a "format c:" and re-install of XP would achieve the same. I have backups of Documents and Settings to reload.
Reformatting and reinstalling XP will give you a complete new start. Everything that is on your system will be removed. Just make sure your backups are clean.
Thanks. You raise a point, I don't know when I contracted this so i don't know if backups are clean. Oh boy, don't really want to go through the cleaning procedure but may have to. I'll come back on board when I'm ready to do it. I also have the url highjacking problem as well. Can't get to the links I want to, what a mess! I think I got hit about a week ago but not sure. f.y.i…. i'm using my work machine at the moment.
same solution as my url highjack issue. disreguard my issue, i cleaned my machine on the weekend and don't appear to have the problem any longer. there didn't appear to be any user/pass theft exposure. the hijacks appeared to be blocking the research/search for the identified problems, i.e. "Virtool:Cutwail.gen!E". f.y.i…. i used a combination of Live OneCare and Anti-Malware by Malwarebytes. in addition, i copied out my data to external, setup new login account and reloaded my data then removed the devil account. i reran Anti-Malware several times before and after the reload to make sure (and you can never be absolutely sure) that i had removed or isolated all of the devils (there were 40 identified). The "Cutwail" message and the url highjacks were both fixed. i think the Malwarebytes software did an excellent job. note that i didn't have to reinstall XP, just remove old login account and setup new one. wish me luck, i hope the devils aren't sleeping.
