My operating system is Windows Vista. I keep receiving the following error message: "The computer must be restarted before updating can continue. Do you want to restart now? YES or NO" I always select no because this happens after I have already restarted the computer. How do I stop this message from occurring?
Hello, Two quick questions. 1) What has been updated, 2) Do you let the machine shut down by itself, or do you think it is taking too long and Unplug or hold in the power button to shut it down and then restart it?
if this happens only once and a while, then thats what the system needs to finish the Update. if it is happening on EVERY start-up, then it could be that an Update is failing to install. to see if a Windows Update is failing…. start—control panel—-Windows Update, then click -view update history- [or you can click—Start, All Programs, Windows Update…] see what it says is going-on. 1)A couple of updates failed:
Windows mail junk email filter: KB905866 (although on 5/13 it was installed, but on 5/14 and 5/15 it failed) it seems to keep failing when I try to reinstall it.
Windows Vista: KB955430

These were successfully installed:
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool: KB90830
Security Update for Microsoft PowerPoint 2007: KB957789
2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2

2)Before getting this error the computer had frozen and I had to take battery out to restart it.

It happens with every start up. Since the windows mail junk email filter update is failing, is this is what is causing this error?
Would system restore help?
O.K.,
From what you have told us it looks like the issue is the Windows mail junk email filter: KB905866 not installing correctly.
  • Do a system restore to a date before 5/13
  • Go to Microsoft's download website and download this update, saving it to your desktop.
  • Open the dowloaded file from your desktop and let it install..
This is a manual way of updating your computer and usually works when automatic updates do not install correctly.
Make sure that the website is http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details…85-0c6f3d3c2d69 (you can click this link or copy/paste it)
