Hi there, I'm in need of a lil assistance here. My computer seems to enjoy rebooting itself every now and then for no apparent reason. Today however, it's rebooted itself 4 times already and I've only been on the computer for maybe 3-4 hours. I don't believe it's malware because I only need a recent clean with the help of the other members in the Malware/spyware section. Is there a way I can determine what the problem is and hopefully fixing it? Thanks! Edit: Also, when it reboots, it sometimes takes a while for the computer to get past that first screen (the one where it determines how much RAM etc etc)
Define 'reboot'. Pick one: a) Is it going completely through the shutdown process, then turning back on? B) Is it suddenly powering off completely, then turning back on? c) Is it going completely through the shutdown process, then having to be manually turned back on? d) Is it suddenly powering off completely, then having to be manually turned back on? e) Is it getting a bluescreen? f) Other.
Ah, my apologies. it would be b: suddenly powering off completely, then turning back on so, kinda like someone hitting the reset switch I suppose. :)
Turn off your auto-restart so that we can get information about the error from a Blue Screen.

Here's how to turn off auto-restart: (you can turn it back on after you are finished with this repair by reversing the same steps)

1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings
4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart"

Reboot and “write down with paper and pencil the exact “full” error message you may be receiving if you experience a Blue Screen Error or Stop Message

Post the Error Message information into your next reply so that we can identify what next steps may be necessary
here's the blue screen error message (my computer has been doing this all day D= it's so annoying): A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to be dure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adaptors. Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode. Technical information: *** STOP; 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804F384D, 0xADE6E7B0, 0x00000000) Beginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.
More than likely points towards the RAM.

Have you changed any hardware or drivers recently?

If you think you can manage, try memtest86+

Read the first post for a guide on how to perform the test (ignoring the part about it being a notebook forum, it's still relevant either way :) )
This could be hardware or also simply the driver for the hardware. Your latter dump (8E (C05)) is often related to graphics drivers.

Try this program:

http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed

It will ask you to install the Debugging Tools from Microsoft and then will interpret this data.

Another good tool at this point is Windows Memory Diagnostic:

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
the computer has crashed another 2 times and both with different messages, they are as follows: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturor for any window updates you may need. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as cache or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance — The 2nd one was pretty similar except the technical information was different: *** STOP 0x0000001D (0x00AB3B28, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xF74B61E4) *** D347BUS.sys - Address F74B61E4 base at F74A9000, DateStamp 4128A01D Beginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump complete. Was this RAM recently added? Did the computer ever work okay with it installed? Does it match the other RAM as far as speed?

You might put it back if you like and run the Windows Memory Diagnostic as seen here:

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Also you could run MemTest which would require creating a boot floppy or an ISO CD as seen here:

http://www.memtest.org/
Was this RAM recently added?
No

Did the computer ever work okay with it installed?
Yes, it did have a habit of just rebooting every now and then, but lately it's been doing it more often (and I haven't made any hardware changes since building the thing)

Does it match the other RAM as far as speed?
somewhat, yes.

I'll put it back in tonight after i get back from work and will try the Memory Diagnostic test. See how that goes.

I used the comptuer all night without it rebooting once after I pulled the RAM out.

I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic with both RAM in the slots and it didn't find any errors, this being the case I left them both in and continued using the computer but then it crashed (several times in a row) so I pulled the RAM out again and now I'm on 1GB RAM and it seems to be doing ok.
