When I try to boot up my computer, about half the time the monitor will shut off and I hve to turn it off and restart. When I restart the computer, once again I have about a 50% chance of it not starting properly. Also, about 3 weeks ago about half of the icons on my desktop turned completely red and I cannot figure out why or how to fix this…Any help would be appreciated. Here is a link to my malware forum posts. Thank you.

Hi japanjon,

I'm aware that Ax238 is also looking in on this situation, but I'll start out with some of the easy stuff.

1. Connectors and cables can be problematic.
Be sure that the Monitor wires are not compromised and that the connectors are secure.

2. Monitors fail over time, and this may be happening in your case, but we will check other possibilities before giving up on it.

3. Video Card Drivers can become Corrupted.
Please check in Device manager for any yellow or red warnings, expecially at the "Display" item.

4. Video Cards and/or onboard video adapters can go wonky and/or fail.
Do you have a spare Video adapter Card that you can substiture/install for test purposes?

5. Overall machine function can impair video feed to Monitor.

We can get a better idea of what is presently going on with your machine with a Full Test from PCPitstop.

Please Run the PCPitstop Full Tests, here:
http://www.pcpitstop.com
Register and create a password
Accept the ActiveX component to allow your machine to run the Full Tests
Registering and accepting the ActiveX are both SAFE and FREE.
Full Tests is the first item in the left hand column of that page.

The Full Tests take about 2-3 minutes for most machines.
Once you have your Results, please post the TechExpress Link back here into this thread for review.
TechExpress is the last item on the list in the yellow box in upper right area of any Results page.
Post the entire URL link information back here into this Forum thread.

This will give us a good start on narrowing down the possibilities.

And Ax238, please feel free to jump in with any specific suggestions and areas of investigation.

Best Regards
Hi japanjon,

Have you been able to investigate the other questions that I posted above?
We need the answers and if we proceed without them, we may be overlooking the problem.

Especially answers to
#1 (with the computer and monitor turned off and power cords unplugged) Physically examine the Video Controller cord (to be sure it is not damaged) and connector to be sure it is fully and securely seated in the plug and the little hex head screws are tightened to keep the video controller cable in place attached to the the VGA connector on your tower.
and
#3 - are there any yellow or red warnings in Device Manager? (if so what and where)
______________

When you state:

Also, about 3 weeks ago about half of the icons on my desktop turned completely red

Please describe the actual appearance of the altered Icons.
For instance, do they appear as:

a little red box with a white x within in the lower left side.

if so this is an MS Windows bug that can be easily fixed with a few steps.
If different, we need to know "different in what way, specifically?"

Reboot and post back here with your progress.
(we haven't specifically worked on the "red" icons yet so they will probably still appear red)

We have just corrected the Browser Cache Overflow above, and this may not have done anything to improve your Monitor performance, but was nevertheless important to do.

Tell us how your machine is running. And complete your answer to #1 and #3 above

Best Regards
