Tomk is a superb tech…Follow his instructions in order and exactly & you WILL come out OK…

That's good advice!
Let's leave the malware scanning/removal strategies to the trained experts like TomK.
After all, that's what he gets paid the big bucks for! :D

But seriously, let's not get involved in strategy that could be handled better by TomK and his colleagues.

Avast, if configured correctly updates and scans automatically in my experience …
Certain scans and most particularly online scans, you need to be online for them to work

100% correct

Avast , SpyBot , MBAM

To my knowledge, (and I'm NO expert) these programs scan best offline…Except for SpyBot & MBAM , AVAST! is actively watching for intrusions (viruses etc) when you are online & warns you …
I had probs with AVG , so I do not have it onboard…I'm not the slightest bit familiar with "ZoneAlarm Firewall " or "Ghost image software"….But that's fine with me…
ALL my anti-virus programs (I have 3) are manually on demand…None are of the "online" variety…

Best Regards… :D

Thats not wise. You should at least have one active anti-virus going at all times.
Furthermore, I wouldn't recommend having more than one Anti-virus installed.
Regardsless if they are inactive. Reason being that most AV's installs some of the
same places in the registry. These can be protected areas, where the AV puts in
special rules in order to monitor it correctly. Weird behaviour and / or crashes could
occur, if one is not wised in how the registry works. Instead, use one or more of the
online scanners in the cases where you want second opinions.

Anti-spyware scanners, you can have as many as you want, as long as only one
is active with real-time protection.

I have Avast! , SpyBot , MBAM , & Windows Defender (do not use WD) The ONLY one active is Avast!….I run the others offline regulary…To my knowledge , SpyBot & MBAM are Anti-spyware scanners….Maybe also Windows Defender…& Avast! is Anti-virus and a scanner….Am I correct on this & am I safe with these programs all installed at the same time ??…Not operating , (except Avast) just installed…I ONLY use 1 at a time…
Avast! has given me perfect protection since I got it…
Thanks for the added advice , I will follow it …

BTW: WD MAY be active…I just remembered that at times WD pops up a message asking to permit / deny registry changes…I deny ALL changes…Had probs permitting some changes…

Best regards…

Hehe, it should be just fine. A little mistake I think.

ALL my anti-virus programs

I took your sentence literally. Anti-virus and Anti-Spyware are two very different worlds,
when speaking applications B)
