Hi there everyone! I am looking to upgrade my At&t internet account, which will offer the "AT&T Security Suite" (Norton). I have recently had a problem with malware and I am wondering if this is a good choice for overall security for my computers (one has Windows Vista and one has Windows XP). Please provide any advise you can. Thanks!

The good news is that Symantec/Norton has done a better job with their most recent version of Security Suite.
Past versions were strong and had good detection rated, but hogged so much computer resources that it miserably slowed down peoples machines.
The present new version does not cause the slow down as badly, and is still the good detection rates.

If it is "free" from your ISP.... go for it.

Hi 963 and welcome to WTT. I would follow Doug's links and choose a free one following his links. Although I am not remotely as computer-savvy as Doug, I have enough personal experience and that of friends not to touch anything remotely connected with Norton. They might have finally got their act together as far as not taking over nearly all of your PC's resources, but I bet they still litter themselves all over your machine. Between Norton, AOL and Microsoft, I'm surprised we don't need an extra Gig of hard disk space for them alone. Sorry about the rant but I HATE Norton. Regards, Satchfan

Hello Tallin I don't run any backup software. I have heard good things about Norton Ghost, however. I back up everything pretty regularly on good old-fashioned removable storage devices. I got stung by a power surge once and have been backing up this way ever since. With regard to Norton, I was specifically talking about NAV and Security Suite. I can't count the number of people I know or have heard of who still have remnants of Norton or AOL on their computers long after they thought they were rid of them. On your recommendation, I'll have another look into NG. Regards Satchfan

Hi Satchfan,

Good to meet you, how is your course going?

Please tell your friends that if they really need to rid themselves of Norton's products (and I agree with you other than Norton's Ghost) go here and download and run Norton's Removal Tool

This is the latest Ghost 14 installation, you can trial it, but it will be one of the best investments you make re your computer if you keep it. Just my opinion.

I run Acronis 10 on my Laptop and they are both equally as good as the other. Both mine are set to automatically update if over 500MB are installed. Once installed and the settings are to your liking, that is it really. Here you are Acronis 7 free, that should change your mind! All you need now is an external Hard Drive with USB connection cable!

In passing, you don't have to go with the latest version, sometimes they offer free downloads and installations for a spell, but research on Google and see what you think.

Keep in touch.

kind regards,

Hi Tallin, it's good to meet you too, although I have seen you around at various forums. Thanks for asking about the course: it's going pretty well but I'm still making stupid oversights. :smack: All-in-all though, I'm enjoying it and learning all the time. All the teachers that have been helping me have oodles of patience and have been really helpful with their suggestions and observations. I'm now on Easy PL 11 and am both dreading and excited about getting closer to the Intermediate ones. With regard to the backups, I'll try both your suggestions and will probably end up buying NG 14. I was hoping to get an external HD from someone either Christmas or my birthday, but alas none appeared - will have to buy one myself! Thanks for taking the time to reply. Best wishes Satchfan

Hi Sachfan,

I did not mention I also use Acronis image backup software on my Laptop. It is equally as good as Ghost for you to research before buying Ghost 14.

Here are two links that may help you in deciding which one you may choose to go with.

HERE & HERE

Thanks for the link Doug.

Norton Internet Security 2009 (or NIS2009) was off to a rough start. First was the psychological factor: I didn’t want to like it. I had bad experience with previous Norton products and security suites.

I suppose that is how many feel - I know it's my view too, but as I pretty much trust G2G , I will repeat 100 times a day "I must try not to hate Norton".

On a serious note,I will read the review and others more thoroughly and try very hard to be objective and less opinionated until fully informed.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Satchfan

Satchfan, You are entitled to your opinion and you appropriately labeled it as such. No Problem. Symantec is the one with the Problem. They are going to have to work long and hard to persuade folks to come back, after treating them in such a shabby way with prior Versions. Up to this new version, I held exactly the same opinion that you have expressed. And I won't be rushing out to buy Norton any time soon, since I'm already happy with other products. Thanks for being a Member and offering your help here at WTT. Doug

Doug Unfortunately, here in the UK, every PC store has been persuaded to endorse Norton and it is usually advertised and offered at discount prices to persuade newbies that it is 'the business'. - with it, their computers are safe, and without it they will die a horrible death. It is this type of bullying and misleading tactic that aggrivates me, especially when Norton was bleeding the life out of every PC that only had 256mb of ram at the time. People have long memories and they are finally getting wise to it. I agree that Norton have some pretty serious bridge-building to do - maybe they have left it a bit late to finally get their act together. With regard to joining the WTT Classroom, I'm grateful to be offered the chance to learn from such renowned company. Hopefully, I'll eventually be able to help towards blitzing the baddies. Lots to learn first though. Regards, Satchfan
